Rail losses loom over B C Railway northeast coal plan

A draft report for the British Columbia legislature says the provincially owned railway would lose money shipping northeast coal at current rates unless the government offsets the losses. It cites a $5 million annual depreciation for the Tumbler Ridge line and projects further $6.7 million in losses over five years due to discounted coal transport, with the government set to cover the extra costs. The report also criticizes broadened cabinet control over Crown corporations and banking rules, warning this could undermine board autonomy and day-to-day management.
