British Columbia Minimum Wage Up on May First

The 2011 changes raise the general minimum wage from eight to eight fifty per hour and repeal the First Job Wage. A liquor servers rate of eight fifty per hour is introduced for qualifying staff. Non hourly camp leaders and related workers receive proportionate adjustments. Crop piece rates rise by about 9.375 percent. Further details at www.labour.gov.bc.ca/esb.

Province steps up gaming grants to thousands of groups

The province increased gaming grants by about 22.5 million in 2010-11, aiding nearly 6,000 organizations including community centres, cultural groups, and scouts. An independent head will lead a review of government role in gaming with input from charities, communities, industry and local governments. More details at www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming/grants/
