Canada urged to pursue bilateral free trade with United States
Frank Oberle MP reports the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs released the final volume of its seven year Canada U S relations study. It urges a negotiated bilateral free trade agreement to boost resource processing and manufacturing, noting a 1981 trade surplus driven by primary industries but a $15 billion deficit in manufacturing with the U S. The committee argues liberalizing trade is needed amid G A T T rounds and U S energy laws, and calls for an industrial strategy supporting value-added sectors.
