Property tax reform eyed for 1983 by B C municipalities
Union of B C Municipalities President Mayor George Thom warns that a 1983 plan with a variable tax rate and expenditure restraint can stabilize taxes only if the province guarantees at least 1982 grant levels. He urges Premier Bennet to disclose 1983 revenue sharing funds to allow councils to solidify budgets and hold spending, noting local tax notices control only part of levy proceeds.

Burning permits required in Peace River region areas
Within the Burning Permit Exempt Area in the Peace River region, permits are required to burn only on Crown Land while campfires need no permit. Fire Prevention coordinator Dawson Wallin says permits ensure safe burning and cover debris from industrial or land clearing, forest debris from logging, and prescribed burns to improve wildlife or cattle range. During fire season, any burning requires a permit and advance contact with the local Forest District Office. Permits are free and obtainable from Forest District Offices in Prince George Van derhoof Fort St. James.
