B C Rail reports 1982 net income of 18.6 million dollars, the highest in its 70 year history. President M C Norris credits cost controls and austerity during the 1981 forest industry labor dispute for the result despite a weak North American economy.
The District of Chetwynd gains approval for a bylaw authorizing 367000 to finance the first stage of a three part water system upgrade. Financing will be via the Municipal Finance Authority with annual revenue sharing grants reducing debt charges. Provincial officials praised the project.
District Council considers an Economic Development Officer on April 5 1983. Two reports Braaten and Mayor Lasser were reviewed. Braaten suggested appointing an alderman as Industrial Co ordinator with a 12000 yearly budget. Dunn opposed funding from the budget. Lasser urged hiring a dedicated officer with funding from general revenue and possible regional district financing. Council asked for more information and alternative financing avenues to avoid mill-rate increases.
The District Municipality of Chetwynd appoints two new aldermen and reorganizes council committees effective April 5 1983 through December 5 1983. Willard Dunn chairs Roads Streets equipment operation and street lighting with Schmok on the committee. Bob Shirley heads water sewer utilities flood control and liaison duties with Hoover. Braaten chairs parks recreation landscaping and airport operations with Temple. Temple chairs health sanitation garbage dog control pollution control and related tasks with Hoover Braaten and Lasser on the committee. Schmok chairs finance annual budget long term finance and policies with Dunn. Schmok Mayor Lasser and staff oversee personnel and education policy. Aldermen Braaten Schmok Hoover rotate acting mayor duties. Regional District rep Hoover with Lasser alternate. Industrial development tied to Chamber of Commerce chaired by Shirley. District auditors Slowinski Winter, Stanley RAR OSA Eng, Banke as Canadian Impori. Lawyers Valai Kawano and Co. only appointee to Industrial Development Officers Advisory Committee Mayor Lasser. The W A C Bennet Dam Summer Tour begins May 16 1983 with tours daily 9 am to 5 pm and The Look Out restaurant 1 km from the dam. Contact 783-9211 for more info.
The Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce is creating a yearly and monthly events calendar at the tourist booth to avoid date clashes and provide free advertising. Clubs should send Elaine dates to be added. contact numbers are given. A May 25 Retail Selling Techniques Workshop costs 25 dollars per person and is coordinated with Fort St. John. The Vintage Car Club visits July 26 with a potential show on July 27, the first in 25 years, expecting 25 to 50 cars.
The B.C. Assembly of Art Councils will hold its Annual General Meeting and Conference in Chetwynd on May 6 7 and 8 1983. Arts Alive will feature a three day program on the event.
Ten British Columbians won cash prizes from 100000 to 5000 in Super Loto 6 49 and Provincial Lotteries. Pushpa Naidu of Richmond won 100000, with others including William Lund of Mission and Denis MacMillan of Vancouver. Audrey Vix of Richmond won 5446.90 in Arts in Tourism draw.
Municipal revenue sharing totals 100 million dollars in conditional grants for British Columbia municipalities, up from 99.2 million in 1982. Unconditional grants depend on population budget and tax base, with 19 municipalities listed. Chetwynd will receive 128,751 dollars as part of a forgivable Canada British Columbia Travel Industry Development Subsidy loan of 140,000 dollars for a North Peace museum project linking to the petroleum sector.
