June Cochrane’s spring wildlife notes at Moberly Lake
Six Canada Geese rest on open water near the bridge while a bald eagle perches high in a tree. An owl hunts low over the snow, a short-eared hunter with a downed head scanning below. Two ravens share a branch, redpolls number at least a hundred, and grosbeaks flee as the flock dominates the area. Tony discovers a snow cave used by a grouse near the wellhouse as June, a long-time resident at Moberly Lake, observes the season’s early signs.
