Billy Arnold of Chicago won the 500 mile Indianapolis Speedway race leading all but two laps. Detroit’s Shorty Cantlon finished second, Indianapolis’ Lotte Schneider third. one mechanic, Paul Marshall of Detroit, died in a crash.
The West Virginia Federation of Postal Clerks was formed by delegates from across the state in the Federal building. The organization affiliated with the American Federation of Post Office Clerks and the American Federation of Labor. B. Brealey of Huntington was elected president and installed by H. C. Weinstock of Philadelphia. About 550 postal clerks are expected to join as the new federation grows.
Parkerburg dispatch notes Taggert named head of the Letter Carriers union branch with John J. Culty of Pittsburgh on the national board of trustees for the National Aid and Benefit Association in the carriers' union.
Ol Yard Cecil Hundley was bruised when knocked from an automobile driven by Kermit Teener of Washington Street about eleven o clock last night as he attempted to arrest Tucker en larosDy Munsiey in Quarrier. He was injured at Mountain Rise Despites last night where beat his condition. Tucker was at the home of his parent in upper Washington Street about midnight. He faces charge of felonious assault and theft of merchandise.
The German airship Graf Zeppelin, on its fourth U S visit, was 500 miles south of New York and expected to land at Lakehurst naval air station at dawn. Weather and fuel concerns prompted a Havana detour cancellation and a revised route toward Friedrichshafen. The crew shifted to Lakehurst with a fuel reserve, avoiding a late Havana stop.
The seventeenth annual convention of the West Virginia branch of the United National Association of Postal Clerks named D. Haught of Clarksburg president and elected G. W. Miller of Charleston first vice president and A. J. Maynard of Williamson second vice president. F. M. Boom of Huntington became secretary and Charles B. Lockhert of Parkersburg treasurer with Clyde McKinney of Weston as delegate to the Dallas national convention. About 51 members attended as speakers included State Senator Bernie Engle, John J. Grogan, and L. N. Morgan. Group life insurance topics were discussed during the business session.
William Hill Jr and his brothers attempt a perilous barrel run through Niagara whirlpools from the Maid of the Mist area to Queenston. The trip lasts from 1 15 PM to 9 06 PM as the vessel is battered by rapids and eddies. The crew and family watch as the barrel is towed clear.
Charleston observed Memorial Day with bands, parades, and a ceremony at Spring Hill cemetery. Marines from the NO 8 Naval Ordnance plant provided salutes as Phil M. Conley of the West Virginia Review delivered the address.

Washington May 20 The Associated Press reports 38 mid sized cities join the 1980s group in the 1949 count replacing larger cities. The compilation lists Roanoke Covington Wheeling and Charleston with population figures and growth rates in a ranking of mid sized urban areas.
At Gettysburg President Hoover delivers a 1040 word memorial address recalling Lincoln's immortal words. Thousands, including 56 Union veterans and one Confederate William Maines, gather as Hoover lays a wreath and emphasizes unity and sober leadership.
A 50 foot fishing launch Ameco capsized off Santa Monica after a giant wave struck, washing men, women, and children into the Pacific. Seven bodies were recovered with more missing. The vessel was top heavy and overcrowded as passengers attempted to ride the waves.
Conley condemns lawless trends and calls on state citizens to follow military example of duty. At American Legion exercises in West Virginia National Cemetery he honors soldiers, urges uphold of constitutional ideals, and laments delinquencies harming the nation while paying tribute to their sacrifices.
Nebraskan Rep. Johnson defeats Indiana Rep. Vestal in a tight final at Smith Stadium to claim the first congressional Open Barnyard Golf Championship. Johnson overcoming early deficits and late rally by Vestal, ends with a 30 final score and earns chromium plated shoes. Vestal receives a similar award.
Huntington resident Averingen Bradley were chosen to fill two board seats at the C and O company amid recent directorate changes. The move comes as the organization reorganizes its leadership roster.
