Pope Paul VI Appears at St Peter's Window for First Sunday
A sweltering 87 degree noon crowd of about 50 000 in St Peter's Square witnessed Pope Paul VI's first Sunday appearance at a window above the Apostolic Palace. He led the noon Angelus, answered cheers with warmth, and encouraged devotion as Vatican plans for his coronation proceed ahead of President Kennedy's arrival. Cardinal Spellman and Cardinal Ruffini attended, with U.S. officials and seminarians present. The scene contrasted with Pope John XXIII's last appearance, and the crowd included monks nuns sailors from the 6th Fleet, many waving hats and babies aloft.
