President opposes Senate cut to base bill on overseas air bases
President Truman urged Senator Russell and the Armed Services Committee to resist a proposed 30 to 50 percent slash in a $2.758 billion bill. The measure would fund Air Force base construction including secret bomber bases in the Middle East and around the Soviet perimeter. Truman warned such cuts would be a terrible disaster and leave vital defenses at risk.
