Dan Halstead Set for Murder Trial Tomorrow
Dan Halstead formerly of Hana wha street faces an intermediate court trial tomorrow for the murder of Walter Mynes a 30 year old Charleston lunch wagon cook. Mynes died at a local hospital from a head blow allegedly delivered by Halstead during a fight at Kanawhe street hotel where Halstead then resided. Mynes reportedly visited Halstead’s place to see a young woman and was denied entry leading to the confrontation. The case schedule was set by the intermediate judge with others awaiting trial and potential early dispatches noted.

Manganese Ore Projects Spark South Dakota Industry
Chamberlain June 14 UP construction of the first unit of a 8.5 million manganese mining plant near Oacoma and a hydroelectric power plant at Big Bend along the Missouri river will begin this month. The project aims to produce 16 000 horsepower, with over 100 000 000 tons of manganese estimated in the Missouri river hills within 60 miles of Chamberlain. A Detroit company plans to acquire 20 000+ acres and lease 125 000 additional acres, forming an $8,000,000 operation under a South Dakota charter. The ore, with 16 to 24 percent manganese content, will supply hardening steel previously sourced from imports. John Absner discovered the deposits three years ago during power area tests.
