Bigger Tax Bite Seen To Finance Highways
Thomas F. Stafford reports from the West Virginia Highway Users Conference that a larger tax bite is forecast to fund an unprecedented federal state highway system. Arthur C. Butler of Washington says cost totals will be known after all state cost statements are submitted, with the program currently at 101 billion dollars and an interstate network linking major cities and capitals. West Virginia’s share is about 225 miles, mostly along U S 60 from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs, with most interstate work in the next three years set at 76.1 million dollars, a figure likely to shift as costs evolve under state adjustments and a 90 percent federal share on the interstate. Gov. Underwood and state road officials attended, stressing close cooperation between highway officials and users to meet the building needs.

Ramsey Leads Citizens Party To Sweeping St Albans Victory
The St Albans Citizens Party was defeated in all contests by the St Albans Peoples Party. Averil L Ramsey won the mayoralty with 1,990 votes to Calvin N Hall Jr 1,181. Eight Peoples Party nominees joined eight council seats and two councilmen at large were elected. Voter turnout exceeded 40 percent of 7,411 registered. Council-at-large winners were W H McFadden 1,946 votes and Gordon K Meadows 2,028 votes. A tire department maintenance levy passed 2,133 to 943.
