Lewis Receives Honorary Law Degree at WVU Ceremony

Labor leader John L. Lewis was awarded an honorary doctor of law degree at West Virginia University Field House in Morgantown. Gov. Cecil Underwood, Gov. C. William ONeill, and Dr. Colgate Darden joined him as honorees amid a two hour ceremony honoring 1,200 graduates.

Nine Kanawha County Towns Vote On Officers

Kanawha County communities are among 154 towns casting ballots for municipal officers today. The slate ranges from Morgantown with about 25 000 residents to Montrose in Randolph County with 80 residents. Contested issues appear in Dunbar and St Albans.

Barker Proves Candidacy For Dunbar Mayor Amid GOP Claims

Lawrence Barker showed documents to counter Republican charges about 1956 tax and sanitary bill payments. He presented two checks totaling 2.53 to Dunbar Sanitary Board and a sheriff’s receipt, claiming other payments exist. Dunbar election is today with Barker challenging W C Noyes as Democrat against Republican.

Trust Violation Says High Court

Valley Construction Stalled by Labor Walkouts in Kanawha Valley

About 500 union workers from Plumbers Local 651 Pipefitters and Apprentices Local 625 and Cement Masons Local 887 walked off as contracts expired. A Friday meeting ended in deadlock with cement masons seeking 35 cents hourly raise and double time, while contractors offered 25 cents and double time from January 1 1958. The walkout threatens most valley projects as no contract means no work under a long maintained rule.

Hardman resigns as chairman of county revaluation board

E. D. Hardman president of General Realty Co. says he will not serve as chairman of the county court's 20 member bipartisan committee on equalization and revaluation of property. He cites time and terms of the resolution and notes his role as state American Legion commander. The plan calls for a statewide committee and county level bodies with a Democrat and Republican in each district.

Far East Flu May Reach U S Say Health Officials

A Public Health Service spokesman warned there is a good chance the Far East influenza epidemic could be introduced into the United States, though no outbreaks are reported domestically. Philippines data show 145 deaths in 150,000 cases as scientists link the outbreak to unusual Type A influenza viruses. The service has urged states and ports of entry to report respiratory disease cases promptly.

The Margiotti estate files $338,630 in unpaid legal fees and expenses against William G. Lias and his family. Memorial Day Toll Hits 414 In Four Day Weekend

The Associated Press reports motorists were safer than expected as four day Memorial Day figures show 414 highway fatalities from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday. Drownings reached 134 and 113 died from other causes with California leading at 37 deaths followed by Texas with 32 and Georgia with 22.
