Kansas City December 12 A Justice Department statement by Major Charles A Shepard was offered in his murder trial over his wife s death. Grace Brandon government witness left the stand after two days of testimony. Shepard s statement claims no one entered their lives a poor marriage and denies taking mercury from Fort Riley dispensary. The statement contradicts Brandon s testimony that Shepard fell in love with her before his wife died in 1929. Letter reads that Mrs Shepard refused divorce. G man stenographer read the statement from notes taken at Denver before arrest. Only half finished when court adjourned. Brandon testified Shepard described May 20 1039 when she became ill he collapsed after eating sandwiches and planned to drink bed wine. Defense suggested agents coached her. she said they did not. Defense read love letters. Brandon cried and avoided spectators.
