Babe Ruth, famed Yankee slugger, died at Memorial Hospital Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases in New York at 7 01 p m EST. He passed after a long illness caused by cancer with last rites given by Rev Thomas H Kaufman. Ruth's wife Claire and relatives were at his side as doctors and nurses attended him in his final hours.
Soviet Consul General Yakov Lomakin accused White Russians of kidnapping and drugging Mrs. Oksana Kosenkina, a Russian chemistry teacher, and cited American officials' actions as causing a nervous breakdown before her leap from the consulate window. Kosenkina, under House committee subpoena, is hospitalized in Roosevelt with injuries after a five day stay at the consulate. Consular officials claimed rescue from a White Russian camp at Valley Cottage, run by Leo Tolstoy’s granddaughter Alexandra Tolstoy, denying unlawful detention.
At the West Virginia American Legion convention in Huntington Donald R. Wilson a 31 year old Clarksburg attorney and Army captain who served in the African Mediterranean theater was chosen by acclamation as the new state commander He succeeds W R Furaitt of Beckley and about 500 delegates attended the final session A referendum on a state bonus for World War I and II veterans was unanimously asked by the legionnaires and the auxiliary chose Mrs C B Dotson as state president. Wheeling was chosen to host the 1949 convention next August with exact dates to be set by the Wheeling post.
Margaret Price McLaughlin of Keyser and Jennie Lee Johnson of Hinton compete for Miss North and Miss South titles in the North South Football game events at Laidley field. McLaughlin is a Keyser senior with multiple leadership roles and a yearbook staffer. Johnson is Hinton’s former homecoming queen and Who’s Who honoree. The 20 queen contenders arrive in Charleston Thursday for the Pigskin Pageant and Friday night reception before crown presentations during the game.
Washington Aug. 16 The House Un American Activities Committee questioned former State Department official Alger Hiss for three hours amid continuing dispute over chambers accusation that Hiss is part of a Communist movement. The session was held behind closed doors as the committee plans resumed public hearings Sept. 7 and considers bringing Hiss and Chambers face to face.
Movietone News will film the North South game with Emile Montemarro assigned to cover the event Friday night. Montemarro previously covered the 147 event here and corresponding screenings were shown in theaters worldwide the week after West Virginia's promotion.
A Berlin liberal paper claims a Communist fifth column in Western Berlin plans a purge of anti Communists should the Western Allies withdraw. The piece warns against a new Munich in Moscow talks and urges the Allies to stand firm to prevent wider European repercussions. In Moscow diplomats from the United States Britain and France met with Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov for a three hour 40 minute session in the Kremlin the longest since talks began July 31 Western envoys refused to comment or indicate plans for further meetings U S Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith and French envoy Yves Chataigneau joined British envoy Frank Roberts after the session Molotov was expected to respond to Western Berlin settlement proposals with a London diplomatic official noting the proposals were largely unchanged.
A Charleston councilman charged last night that illegal gambling clubs are operating under police protection. James C. Campbell said life threats forced him to push the issue after Police Chief Harvey Rexroad reported ongoing investigations. Rexroad, who recalled August findings, said illegal whisky sales and gambling had been curbed but clubs are now in better shape with police protection.
President Truman signed the anti inflation bill and blasted Congress for catering to special interests while vowing a labor centered campaign. He said high prices will be the theme and announced a Detroit Labor Day speech to push the November vote. The bill tightens consumer credit rules and raises bank reserve requirements to curb spending and slow purchases.

Sponsored by local and national firms, the event features color guards, a Cavalcade of Cars, Rainbow Girls, Army honor guard, a strong North South Band, 90 plus majorettes, and 19 high school beauty queens in a Rose Bowl style spectacle.
