In Washington on August 5 West Virginia delegates Marion Zimmerman and Daniel Jefferies were elected chairmen of their rival Parties at the Girls Nation convention. A 21 year old U S Merchant Marine Academy midshipman, Eugene Landy, ranked high in his class, was denied a Naval Reserve commission because his widowed mother once belonged to the Communist party. An academy official called him one of the brightest students, noting loyalty despite the family political tie. Miss Hattie Umbarger a 26 year old cafeteria waitress from Hinkle Mountain near Richwood survived three days wandering through the woods after her car plunged 500 feet down Curtin Mountain. Found by a berry picker near Curtin Mountain, she was in fair condition at McClung Hospital with multiple injuries and shock.
