Ralph Hibbs of Thayer R2 won the grand champion corn in the Fall Festival crops and gardens judging with a white hybrid entry edging Dick Stipp. Hibbs also took the 50 ear corn class with G W Hibbs of Thayer R2 second. Neil Feld earned best single ear honor. Entries are on display today and tomorrow at 17 S Highland with baked goods for sale.

Anderson Plans Reply To Charges At Topeka Rally
Gov. John Anderson readied a reply to Democratic charges against Republican officials to inform the public of the administration’s position. He said remarks may come Saturday in Emporia and Lyons or next week. Secretary of State Shanahan declined comment on a charge that James Gallo sought outside business. Gallo said he will retire by year’s end and takes no outside work before then. The Chanute Fall Festival kicked off with a Main Street dance. events include talent show, pie-eating contest, a large parade with multiple bands, and prize pulling at City Park.

Beeler faces beer sales charges over Erie club
Earl Beeler Jr of Erie is charged with two counts of violating the city liquor ordinance after opening a shuffleboard club at 211 E. Main.
