About 300 attendees from Kansas retail and wholesale food firms are expected at the fourth annual Kansas Food Retailers Conference on the Kansas State University campus October 10.
The Chanute Humane Society elected officers to meet state charter requirements. President Mrs. Josephine Kjarsgaard. Vice President J. T. Johnson. Secretary treasurer Mrs. Marie Galt. Charter application will be filed with the secretary of state. A directors’ election will occur later.
Today in Topeka Kansas the weather is clear and cool with overnight lows around 30 degrees at Kerwin and Lovewell Dams. Highs will reach the 60s and tonight will fall into the 50s with some 40s in the northwest. A warming trend starts in the west and spreads by Friday with scattered showers along the southern border and eastern Kansas.
Chanute youths will enjoy a two day Halloween program with Oct 30 and 31 activities. Senior and Junior High councils, police, Chamber of Commerce, JayCees and officials plan window painting, a UNICEF drive, free movies, a dance, and a bonfire.
Candidates from the Sons and Lovers of Liberty party won all top posts at Chanute Junior College. David Durham was elected president Leon Mendez became vice president and Nancy Sparks took secretary treasurer. Lead party nominees were defeated. Total votes reached 149, about three quarters of eligible voters. John Freeman chaired the party.

Kansas Turnpike Authority chaired by George W. Gagel of Lenexa approved a preliminary budget of 1,791,170 for 1962, about 60,000 less than current year. The plan trims around 25,000 in a day-long session. final approval slated for October. 1961 and 1960 figures cited for context.
A Lions district governing body met at the Tioga Hotel with chair man Ervin Brune of Chanute presiding. Mrs Mollie C Neely of Wichita was killed when a car crashed at a road dead end south of the city. The driver Melvin Hawley of Wichita was admitted to a hospital with severe chest injuries.

Beir ut reports say Syrian army officers rebel against Gamal Abdel Nasser within the United Arab Republic context. Damascus radio claimed Amer promised to meet rebel demands, while curfews and border closures spread in the capital and across Syria.
At the U S Reduction Co aluminum plant in Chicago a blast at 7 10 a m during shift change killed two men George Battle and Abraham Smith and injured about 40 with 43 men reported at hospitals. Howard Estabrook, vice president, said up to 100 workers could have been near the plant.
Willis Chaney 32 of 1714 West Main was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital for an accidental gun shot wound and released. Police said a .22 rifle discharged while cleaning it during a squirrel hunt, striking him under the left arm and exiting at the shoulder as he lay down before calling police.
Eight members of the Rosewell family perished in a blaze at their home near Port Dover Ontario. Father Joseph Rosewell 51 mother Pauline 41 and children Robert 20 Shirley 13 Joan 11 Ella 9 Joseph Jr 4 and Terry Allan 4 months died. Daughter Mary 16 escaped with severe burns and was hospitalized. Neighbor Harry Kniffen alerted the fire dept after Mary fled the scene.
The X-15 rocket plane, flown by Cmdr Forrest Petersen, hit 3545 mph during a 9 minute test over the Mojave Desert. The craft endured 1000 degree heat with wings and surfaces glowing while airframe and controls were tested at high acceleration and 45,000 to 100,000 feet. The test aimed to prove performance for speeds up to 4000 mph and 50 to 100 mile altitudes.
Gertrude Hunter won a court order requiring her estranged husband M Lakin Hunter to return her season football ticket to the University of Colorado games. Hunter filed for divorce on September 21 accusing mental cruelty. the couple married in 1939 and have two children. She sought reconciliation and described attending games as a traditional happy experience.

Firefighters were called to the Byers rock plant at 500 N. Plummer at 8:20 a.m. today to battle a tractor fire. The blaze started during fueling from a tank. workers moved the tractor away as the truck arrived. Wiring, battery and a front tire were damaged.
