The Chanute Fall Festival's Festival Frolics drew about 1,000 for the Memorial Building show the second day of the 18th annual event. Marty Barnhart won the pie eating contest in two minutes, earning a $5 gift certificate.
Adult education programs announce fall term enrollment Monday night from 7 to 8 for courses in dressmaking and tailoring typing and shorthand electric arc welding Spanish psychology and accounting plus other classes with sufficient interest. Instructors include Mrs Ethel Reno Bernice Akers Harold Sharp Miles Rickart E L Penner and Mrs Robert Cox with locations in the Senior High School rooms 311 201 314 and the Senior Trade School.
Gene Orr of 418 N Highland says hurricane Carla carried alkali dust from Texas that stained newly painted Chanute homes turning green shingles white. The discoloration will fade as oxidation occurs, and a vinegar and water mix can speed restoration by neutralizing the alkali.
Lt. Joseph F. Colangelo of Alexandria Virginia was killed when his single engine Navy patrol plane overturned during an emergency landing at an unsighted Savanna field. Lt. Hugh R. Taylor landed safely as bad weather forced the diversion on a training flight from Moffett Field to Glenview. Savanna lies about 35 miles southeast of Dubuque Iowa.
A Walnut Kansas break in at the Ivan Hardin service station netted only several bags of goobers peanuts reportedly taken by the burglars.
A San Mateo County jury acquitted Kay Ellis 58 of indecent exposure and public decency charges. She testified she used her backyard pool for racial integration efforts and that she would have dressed if she knew she were observed.
Several hundred youths rioted for two hours in the University of Missouri fraternity and sorority district in Columbia. A youth was hospitalized with a head injury, another treated for a hand cut, a fireman punched, and at least five youths cited in municipal court as city police and university security battled to disperse the crowd. The disturbance began when a fire truck answered a street fire call and the rioters pelted firemen with firecrackers and bottles until aid arrived.
Wichita police report six week crackdown reduced daily accidents from 20 to 15 in early September. Average daily economic loss dropped from 10 100 to 9 500 dollars. Data covers 242 days ending Aug 31 and first part of September.
