John Stephenson of Whalley B C says he will stay to roads or carry survival gear after being lost seven times in three years. He is hospitalized with a sprained ankle after a three day rescue following his latest hunting trip.
London reports British commercial banks lift their prime lending rate to 9 percent as part of a wider credit squeeze. The move mirrors recent hikes in Austria West Germany and Switzerland while U S banks had set 8.5 percent with Federal Reserve constraints pushing effective rates higher.
The City Council approved a 50 cent garbage fee increase to fund higher salaries for about 2,285 of the 3,126 city employees. The raise tops at $20 per month, but the action has little effect on ending the sanitation workers strike.
Ford Motor Co, the nation’s No 2 automaker, raises 1970 model prices on average by 108 dollars or 3.6 percent. GM boosts by 125 dollars or 3.9 percent. Ford keeps Maverick price at 1995, remaining the lowest priced American-made car next to Amer ican Motors Hornet.
Washington Sen. Hugh Scott announced he now has sufficient backing from fellow Republicans to win the Senate minority leadership on the first ballot next Wednesday. He said support for his rivals Sen. Roman L. Hruska and Sen. Howard Baker has eroded, marking his first claim of a single-ballot victory.
Myron Feemster, owner of Central Gun Shop in Fort Scott Kansas, faces charges of violating the 1968 gun control act. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept 26 in Kansas City Kansas after federal agents raided the shop and seized more than 200 firearms. U S Attorney Robert Roth says Feemster allegedly sold guns to Missouri residents. Treasury agent Bob Hinis notes it is illegal to sell guns to nonresidents of the state where licensed.
Lawrence KS SDS spokesman says boycott of classes could occur to protest the state Senate committee demand for University of Kansas disciplinary board records. The records list 21 students punished after an ROTC review disruption. Committee chair Sen. G Reynolds Shultz plans to release names in about 10 days.
John Kirkwood, Neosho County welfare director, notes federally sponsored incentives to work date back decades. He cites three years of work programs for able bodied welfare recipients, but says many leave due to higher wages in local industries. Programs for mothers under OEO and WII training are also described.

City commissioners study possible water rate increases with acting city manager Jack Brennan. The last raise was in 1952 to fund the sewage plant bonds and boost production costs as demand grows. Water use rising, plant operating at about 75 percent capacity, with future expansion planned but several years away.
At Williamsburg Virginia the Southern Governors Conference defeated a resolution opposing busing to achieve racial balance. The measure failed 8 to 2 with one abstention after VP Agnew voiced opposition. Governors Mandel Peterson Rockefeller abstained while Brewer Georgia Louisiana Mississippi North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Virginia supported the resolution.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird indicated draft calls will fall as Vietnam troop reductions shrink total armed forces by about 60 thousand since mid year. Nixon seeks further troop withdrawals and reform to end draft inequities as the October call near 29 thousand is trimmed.
Red Cross seeks 200 units at the First Methodist Church on Third and Lincoln for a two day blood collection next week Sept 24 25. Donors in good health up to 65 may give. those over 65 need a doctor's permit. Parental consent for under 18 no longer required. Hours are 1 to 6 p.m. on Sept 24 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept 25.
