President Kennedy announced a low yield underground test as the United States began its new series in Nevada. The Shelby County blast reportedly produced no fallout and aimed to show readiness for a controlled test ban.
A sonic boom near Las Vegas caused by a supersonic plane confuses residents who think a nuclear blast occurred. Air Force confirms radar tracked a fast aircraft. the Nevada test site reported low yield and no on site media coverage.
A Wichita church bus with 22 youths from St. James Episcopal Church overturned on the Kansas Turnpike after a right front tire blew out. The driver Jake Hartmetz 28 and eight passengers were hospitalized while 13 teens sustained injuries. Two cars collided at the scene injuring five more.
Parole applications filed for Clifford Eugene Cheney and Gerald James Cheney, cousins from Humboldt, serving sentences in the Lan sing state penitentiary for first degree robbery. They were sentenced May 3 1960 after pleading guilty to a Woodruff Oil Co. garage robbery near Chanute, a cash register theft and a stolen car. Authorities arrested them near Parsons two and a half hours after the holdup.
Two young British explorers returned from the Amazon with the body of Richard Mason a London medical student and member of a party mapping the river. Arrows fired by Indian nomads killed him ten days earlier after he strayed while seeking supplies. Christopher Lambert and John Hemming recovered the body and flew out with it.
Senators Long of Missouri Kerr and Monroney of Oklahoma all Democrats joined Kansas Republican Carlson in backing a $4 billion foreign aid appropriation as the Senate passed it 62 to 17. Senator Schoeppel, also a Republican, opposed the measure. Symington was paired for the vote and did not vote.
City officers investigated two crashes. A 1951 Plymouth driven by Rex W Burdge, 65, failed to yield and bonded ten dollars after turning in front of a truck, minor damage to a 1954 Chevrolet truck and trailer. A second collision at 14th and Santa Fe involved a 1959 Chevrolet and a 1957 Ford. officers moved vehicles and did not complete a full investigation.
Fire caused about 200000 dollars damage to the Vincent Furniture store in downtown Lawrence. Owner Jack Vincent said all merchandise was wiped out as flames gutted a three story section and water and smoke filled a two story section. Cause of the fire was not known.
Duane Rodewald, 24, of Craig Colorado, rode with a homemade plaster cast on his right arm to win saddlebronc at a Kansas City rodeo. He broke the arm July 16 in Santa Fe New Mexico and was warned not to ride until after September 30. He won 80 dollars for a 10 second ride.

The Neosho County Tuberculosis and Health Association hosts a Christmas Seal institute Tuesday at the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers will receive the latest TB information and plans for the annual fund drive "Protect the Family Circle." Kansas leaders W. W. Wilmore Mrs. Hazel M. Goss Jeanine Grubbs and Mrs Richard Spingler will attend and supervise sessions.
Lawrence AP report identifies 20 year old University of Kansas senior Josephine Anne Resnik of Whitewater Kansas as the victim of a Friday night turnpike crash near Lawrence. The car struck an overpass and high speed was cited as a factor.
Hundreds flocked to downtown Chanute for a Mexican Fiesta sidewalk bazaar with Merchan ts offering specials as part of the two day event. The Nambo Marias band performed at the shopping area while last night’s Santa Fe Park dances drew about five thousand attendees as cool weather dampened attendance slightly. Connie Gutierrez of Pittsburg was crowned fiesta queen as Mexican music by the Contreras family of Atchison featured tonight at 7:30.
Typhoon Nancy struck Honshu with winds 112 mph causing floods and high tides. Japan Broadcasting Co reports 77 dead 48 missing 1017 injured with 27556 houses damaged or destroyed. Police record 45 dead 53 missing 617 injured and 188000 flooded. Tokyo prepared as theaters and stores closed.
A wooden scaffold inside a partially built circular Chicago skyscraper buckled and fell 44 stories, killing three carpenters who were lifting a crew of ten to the 44th floor. The accident occurred in the east tower of the Marina City project along the Chicago River.

Arthur Edwin Turner Jr. of Chanute pled guilty in city court to 25 counts of embezzling from Montgomery Ward where he worked as a salesman. He received a year in county jail per count, to run concurrently, paroled two years with restitution. He converted about $48 of the store funds to his use during late 1959 and early 1960.

In Junction City a man and his wife were found shot to death in a liquor store Friday. A pistol lay between the bodies. Mrs. Darnell, 49, a clerk, had filed for divorce July 7 and the case was pending. Mr. Darnell, 52, a Union Pacific car inspector, was the other victim. authorities call it murder and suicide.
