Kansas highway deaths are down from 244 per 100 million miles in 1930 to 4.7 in 1960 due to safety education and enforcement.
AP report from Topeka notes 368 traffic fatalities in Kansas for the 1961 September period ending 9 am Wednesday, a rise from 330 in the comparable 1960 period. The log covers 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday and provides day-by-day counts for the month.
The United States launched a two ton Mercury capsule from Cape Canaveral at 9:04 a.m. EST and recovered it in the Atlantic 1 hour 46 minutes later, 161 miles east of Bermuda. The mission demonstrated automated slowdown rockets and recovery by the USS Decatur and USS Plymouth Rock as NASA eyes a future three orbit crewed flight.
The Chamber of Commerce announces a fall crops tour set for next Tuesday if weather and field conditions allow. Co chairmen Floyd Potter and Aubrey Bostwick say the tour is open to all business people with transport and refreshments provided. Departure is 1 15 p m from the city parking lot east of the Memorial building.
Leslie Norton of Iola was elected chairman of the new governing committee for a proposed mental health clinic. The six appointees will select a seventh member. Dr. E. E. Long and Dr. Eugene Myers from Allen County were named as additional members. The group endorsed Humboldt as a central site if a suitable building is available and will investigate facility options.

Detroit AP report says both sides failed to reach a Thursday agreement on a new three year contract. UAW orders locals with settlements to return to work and others to end strikes as settlements come. Over 9 GM plants were shut by walkouts with no plants back in operation by Tuesday night.
Heavy rainfall across eastern Kansas, including 5.75 inches in the past 24 hours, pushed the Neosho River above flood stage and closed multiple highways. A crest of 26 to 28 feet is forecast with continued wind and cooling, while power outages and downed limbs disrupt several towns.
Up to ten inches of rain drenched the Kansas City area forcing evacuations by boat and helicopter. The Blue River rose above flood stage while many roads were blocked and towns from Shawnee to Merriam and Lenexa reported floodwaters. Schools closed and emergency crews handled widespread calls.

Thayer witnesses rain damage as a 30 foot roof section collapsed at the Smith Grocery and Locker Plant Monday afternoon. E A Smith and wife own the building and report damage limited to the locker plant cutting room while the lockers and chilling room operate. The store remains open and the building is insured though final cost estimates are pending.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved 4.1966 billion dollars for foreign aid, restoring 63 million of a 596 million House cut. The bill, a final obstacle to adjournment, proceeds to the Senate floor Friday.
Three members of a Waverly family died and a fourth was missing after their station wagon was swept off Highway K31 by flood waters from Rock Creek near Waverly Kansas. Eldon Ackerman 28 Thelma Ackerman 36 Linda Anspaugh 10 and Mark Anspaugh 8 were in the car. The Ackermans bodies were recovered and the others later found. the car lodged downstream after being carried about 100 yards. A Butler Missouri couple R O Hough and wife were arrested nearby for driving while intoxicated and possessing an open bottle.
