Mrs. Minnie Carter lifelong Chanute resident marks her 87th birthday. She lives at 219 North Grant, homesteaded the Turkey Creek area, and runs rental and farm property. A charter member of Sunflower Chapter CES and past DUV state president, she enjoys gardening and travel with daughters Robyn and Lucille.

Thayer Homecoming Exposes Large Watermelon Display
Forty six watermelons weighing a total 2667 pounds were shown at the Thayer home coming and picnic last week. Charles Payne reports an average weight just under 58 pounds per melon. Erie Neosho County Republicans spent 1733.93 on their August primary campaigns while Democrats spent 178.82. State law requires campaign statements within 30 days. Personal campaign costs are limited to 10 percent of the first year’s salary. About 80 adult leaders attended the North District Boy Scout rally at the First Methodist church. The event kicked off the district’s fall and winter roundtable series with monthly meetings in successive towns to discuss projects and plans. Two Tenderfeet joined Chanute Troop 3 during the investiture service: Tom Pate and Jerry Elrod.

Area Corn Harvest Underway With 10 to 50 Bushel Yields
Harvesting of corn in the four county area is about one half completed with much of the grain going to market. Yields range from 10 to 70 bushels depending on location with Neosho and Allen counties faring best and drought hitting areas near Humboldt.
