The Chanute Public Library report shows total circulations of 3,704 in August, up from 3,643 in August 1955. Children’s borrowing rose with juvenile fiction up to 1,965, while adult fiction declined and non fiction rose to 445.
Chanute industrial landmark at 702 N Santa Fe changes hands from Charles M. Griffith to Joe Sutcliffe of Sutcliffe Pipe and Supply. Griffith, 86, began the shop in 1904 after emigrating from Ohio, recalls wartime work, earlier staffing of eight, and repairs plus some new boilers for oil fields. Sutcliffe plans a new block to the east and possible warehouse use. the site will also receive a revamped railroad spur refurbishment. Griffith remains active daily at the site and reflects on long career.
TOPEKA A statement that will singe ears from Syracuse Kansas to Kansas City was promised today by state Democratic headquarters at a press conference to be held Thursday morning by George Docking the party's nominee for governor. Ralph Wallace Democratic public relations director announced Docking's first press conference of the campaign in telegrams to newsmen. Wallace said he is confident the press conference will make news history for all this state.
In Sturgis Kentucky and Clinton Tennessee white student attendance rose as newly integrated classes began. Seven black students returned to Sturgis High School without a demonstration while two Negro children enrolled in Clay Kentucky’s all black school amid past protests. Clinton High School saw white enrollment climb to 590 and 11 of 12 Negro students attend class, following prior anti integration disorders. National Guardsmen were present at Sturgis and incidents continued in Clay and Mercer County West Virginia with varying attendance figures.
Maine voters re-elected Gov. Edmund S. Muskie to a second term, setting a record for gubernatorial votes in a presidential year. Frank M. Coffin, Lewiston, won the 2nd District Congressional seat for the Democrats, with results still pending in the 1st District where Robert Hale leads James C. Oliver by 28 votes.
Senate investigators heard Standard Oil of Indiana president Frank O. Prior defend a vigorous campaign to counter a distorted view of the natural gas bill. He denied touching on disputed company telegrams while Senator McClellan alleged fraud and forgery by some employees. The inquiry follows spring lobbying pressures tied to the bill halted by Eisenhower’s veto citing arrogant industry tactics.
A North District Boy Scout rally at First Methodist Church tonight at 7 30 showcases talks demonstrations and exhibits for the coming year. Separate meetings for leaders den mothers and committeemen cover Chanute Iola Humboldt Toronto and Yates Center with Troop 6 Chanute and Troop 3 Chanute co leading the opening and closing ceremonies.
D J Mitchell 64 a veteran oil field worker died when a fire destroyed his five room Chanute area home last night. His wife escaped unharmed as firemen battled the blaze at 10 05 p m. The dwelling owned by Chanute Property Management Corp was east of Chanute. Mitchell known as Jack to friends had worked 32 years in oil with several firms. He leaves a wife two daughters and a son with three grandchildren and two sisters and a brother. Funeral will be Thursday at 2 30 p m at Roy Gibson Funeral Home Me morial Park cemetery will receive burial.
The county commissioners approved a measure to submit a 4 H building project in Erie to voters on November 6. A or more annual tax levy not to exceed one mill for up to two years would raise as much as 65000 dollars to acquire a site erect equip and furnish a building for 4 H clubs livestock shows and civic activities.
In Jefferson City Missouri officials confirm three new typhoid cases linked to a church camp at Monark Springs. A Missouri woman who attended the camp has been identified as a carrier. She helped prepare meals and has agreed to take steps to prevent spread. Public health officials note the camp’s water supply was polluted and state and federal investigators are monitoring the situation.
Washington sent a formal note to Red China through the British Embassy protesting the Aug 23 downing of an American Navy patrol plane. The note says Red China will be asked to pay damages including compensation for the loss of the 16 crewmen. The Agriculture Dept forecasts this year's corn crop at 3 335 730 bushels and wheat at 966 574 000 bushels as of Sept 1.
Officer Frank Smith arrested Jack Webb in Denver for drunkenness. Webb made no comment while Smith and partner G W Spidahl described the incident as routine. The Denver Webb shares a name with a TV personality but is not related.
Homer S. Cummings, a key figure in opposing several New Deal legal efforts, died at age 86 in Washington. He shaped legal battles and public policy across decades of U.S. government.
President Eisenhower urged widening ties across nations to foster people to people contacts and world peace. In an informal talk with about 40 leaders from American life he linked peace to security and tax levels and outlined two conferences on disarmament proposals with top advisers.
In Denver Judge Joseph E. Cook denied the divorce petition of Mrs. Mina EF. Romo 24 seeking a divorce from her fourth husband Joseph B. G. Romo. He sent her home to think over the serious aspects of the marriage relationship after noting short residence with prior husbands including one year with the first, two months with the second, and nine months with the third. The couple wed October 30 1954 and she sued November 3 1955.
Five people were injured when cars driven by William T. Gilliland and Dr. J. H. Dixon collided on K39 highway three miles east of Chanute around 6 40 p m. Dr Dixon and Mrs Pollman were treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital. Gilliland and Mrs Gilliland were released. Kansas Highway Patrolman Duane Houck led the investigation with Chanute officers as two ambulances ferried patients to the hospital.
Topeka reports continued heat with partly cloudy skies and no significant temperature changes. Highs expected in the 90s on Wednesday, with some western areas reaching the upper 90s and a few spots in the 101s yesterday.
Shaw, Republican nominee for governor, urged Secretary Benson to extend the soil bank signup deadline to November 1 and allow farmers to place all their allotted wheat acreage in the soil bank rather than half. He said drought in Kansas risks preventing fall wheat planting and that full enrollment would assure some income in 1957.
Kansas state accident records show 437 traffic deaths in the last 24 hours to date in 1956, compared with 392 in the same period of 1955. The figures reflect the ongoing toll from road incidents across the state.
Dr. William C. Tremmel of Emporia is appointed to the new post of director of student religious activities at Kansas State College in Manhattan Kas. He will oversee campus religious programs and student services.
