United Appraisal Co begins mailing notices of 100 percent appraised values and 30 percent assessed values to Neosho county property owners. Informal hearings on reassessments will run noon to 6 p.m. from Sept 18 to Oct 6 in Erie courthouse meeting room.
Eleven people died in Kansas traffic accidents over the weekend. Victims include Robert C. Walker and his wife Nancy 21 of Mapleton injured fatally Sunday night on K31, and Mattie J. Friesen 59 of Grainfield with Jackie Wayne Knowles 21 of Goodland killed east of Grinnell on Interstate 70.
Scattered thundershowers develop in the northwest tonight and spread into central and northeast Kansas tonight and Tuesday. Partly cloudy skies with little temperature change and highs near 80 to 90 degrees are forecast, with lows mid 50s to low 60s and a 10 to 20 percent chance of rain.
A 90 percent effective teachers strike crippled New York City's school system as teachers stayed home or picketed despite a court order. Detroit and other cities saw continued walkouts with union leaders vowing support and a UAW stand with Ford Motor Co workers.
Terry Gard of 1603 S Ashby and fellow 18 year old Bill Gaudern were in a one car crash southwest of Humboldt. Gard underwent successful spinal surgery at St Margaret's Hospital in Kansas City and also suffered a punctured lung. Gaudern remains under treatment locally.

Hurricane Beulah battered the Dominican Republic with 125 mph winds and aimed toward Haiti, prompting evacuation of more than 1,000 people on the Barahona Peninsula. Forecasters warned heavy rains and flooding could threaten Haiti and Cuba, with potential impact on Guantanamo Bay and offshore warnings extending to the eastern Caribbean.
Kansas traffic fatality log lists numbers for 48 hours to 9 a m Monday for September 26 1967 showing 446 deaths compared with 509 in the same period in 1966. The report covers Topeka and surrounding areas with daily tallies and year to date totals.
Senator Robert Kennedy announced plans to introduce three bills aimed at restricting cigarette advertising and pricing. One bill would require warnings on all ads, another would let the FCC regulate ad timing and volume, and the third would implement a sliding tax to encourage low tar and nicotine products. The move came at a World Conference on Smoking and Health in New York.
Joseph Morgan Jr., 42, of Neodesha, was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a collision with a Southwestern Bell Telephone Co truck four miles north of here on US 169 at about 9 35 a m. Morgan, who was driving a 1966 Chevrolet pickup, followed the truck too closely and struck poles as it turned. One pole pierced the windshield and struck his head. Ivins, 22, of 1309 S Evergreen, the truck driver, and a rider were not injured.

U S Navy planes attacked Cam Pha in North Vietnam while Marines at Con Thien repelled a 3000 strong assault. In fighting, 141 enemy dead, 34 Marines killed and 185 wounded. South Vietnamese forces reported 70 enemy deaths as clashes spread in northern provinces.
The Kansas State Employment Service with the Chanute Jaycees reports 219 of 286 registered youths found work from April to August in roles such as service station attendants, stock clerks, construction laborers, production workers, and farm jobs. Emphasis on work experience and cash income plus ongoing need for job seekers.
Thieves entered the American Legion club rooms at 301 N Evergreen overnight and stole an undetermined amount of cash. Loss included loose change and money separated from principal funds. the safe was pried and damaged. Entry involved tampering with the front door tumbler and inner lounge door. Office door also pried. door marks were faint. Front of the cigarette machine was repaired after the theft. Investigated by Neosho county sheriff and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent. prelim inquiry by the police department. Legion loss set at $994.93.
The Chanute area Chamber of Commerce announces meetings this week. The museum committee meets tonight at 8 in the chamber office. Streets and highways meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the office. The Ambassadors meet Wednesday at 7 a.m. at Hart's Cafe.
