A single vehicle crash near Humboldt claimed the life of 18 year old Mark S. Golay of Rural Route 2. Two other 18 year olds, Billy L. Gaudern and Terry L. A fairly sharp earthquake near the Chile-Peru border was recorded today on Fordham University’s seismograph. Rev. Joseph Lynch said it occurred at 6 16 a m EDT about 4100 miles south of New York and registered 6 on the Richter scale.
Dwight Hauser and his 15-year-old son Erich were rescued in Fresno California after spending 11 days on a sandbar in the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. They survived by eating small trout caught with a safety pin and clothing strings. A note left in their car helped deputies locate the vehicle and led to the successful rescue by a sheriff's pilot.
Kansas Board of Health adopted a rule requiring private as well as public laboratories to report positive test results for diseases including diphtheria syphilis gonorrhea some meningitis cases and other conditions. The board also authorized staff to set hospital licensing standards for facilities that cannot meet federal Medicare staffing requirements to ensure care in underserved areas.
In Pasadena California NASA engineers at JPL fought to close a helium valve leak on the Surveyor 5 to prevent a high speed crash into the moon. If the leak cannot be stopped the craft may be placed in Earth orbit, risking loss of soil tests and cameras.
An explosion at the Michael colliery in East Wemyss Scotland killed seven or eight miners, injured 50 and trapped nine. Three more miners remained missing as fire and rescue teams from the National Coal Board, police, and ambulances joined the effort.
Hurricane Beulah menaced the eastern Caribbean with winds to 85 mph and eight deaths reported in the Lesser Antilles. Forecasters warned a northward turn could push the storm toward Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands while Martinique faced severe flooding and banana crop damage. Chloe remained far offshore with no land threat anticipated.
Public hearing by the zoning appeals board at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial building reviews a ruling denying Mr. and Mrs. George Lightfoot a permit to rent trailerhouse space at 502 West. The permit was denied for insufficient lot area for two residences under the zoning ordinance provisions.
The FCC refused to revisit the decision requiring broadcasters to provide free air time for anti smoking announcements as a counter to cigarette advertising. The ruling, unanimous, cites the fairness doctrine and public interest, while health groups say they will expand anti smoking messages.
