An area farmer on Cloud Camp R3 narrowly escaped injury when a bolt of lightning hit his tractor umbrella as he worked with neighbor Ross Cooper 52 miles northeast of Chanute. The strike blew the umbrella bracket, caused smoke, and later deflated both rear tires. the tires remained intact.
The forecast calls for generally fair and warmer weather tonight and Wednesday with a low of 55 to 60 and a high near 100. A new storm system moves toward northwest Kansas bringing showers and thunderstorms by Wednesday and across the state by Thursday. Flooding was limited with Osawatomie on the Marais des Cygnes river seeing crest by Wednesday, aided by August dry spell. Paola reported eight inches of rain in the eastern third.

A total of 249 students enroll at St Patrick’s parochial school for the 1961 62 year, matching last year. Junior high rises to 78 with 27 seventh, 25 eighth, 26 ninth graders. elementary grades drop to 171. Three new teachers join staff: Sister M Germaine, Mrs Henry Adelgren, and Dorosia Minniear. Classes begin with half day sessions today and regular hours tomorrow.
A thunderstorm weekend dropped 4.05 inches of rain. A tree limb fell on two parked cars on 317 W Main at about 5 30 in the evening with damage to a 1960 Corvair owned by Sam Johnson and a 1950 Oldsmobile owned by George W Garrison. A young American tourist described as a student in West Berlin has been arrested in Soviet Ukraine on espionage charges. Tass says Marvin William MacKinnon photographed military installations on July 27 and will be tried there. espionage carries the death penalty. A protest was presented to the U S Embassy in Moscow.
Washington AP Sen Frank Carlson R Kansas underwent prostate operation at Bethesda Naval Hospital on August 23. He returned home over the weekend and aides say he will stay home several days before resuming duties in his office.
Sharon Springs Kansas report: two teenagers George Ronald York and James Douglas Latham seek venue transfers for their upcoming September 18 trial over the death of Otto Ziegler a 62 year old Oakley railroad man. York and Latham hail from Jacksonville Florida and Mauriceville Texas respectively and their attorney Bernard Whalen of Goodland Kansas plans separate trials.

The Atomic Energy Commission announced a third Soviet atmospheric nuclear detonation in its current series. Seaborg said the test had a low kiloton range and occurred in central Asia in the atmosphere, with officials noting it did not reflect progress toward a proposed ban. Kennedy cut short a Nantucket trip to monitor the news and urged Khrushchev to respond to the ban proposal.
Detroit AP report: United Auto Workers proposed a three member arbitration panel to resolve deadlocked GM contract talks. The plan uses AMC GM settlements and salaried benefits as a guide, with union and GM selecting members and a third as chairman. A strike risk looms if basic provisions are not met.
A public meeting on alleged abuses at the city animal shelter is set for 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Santa Fe room of the Tioga Hotel. Josephine Kjarsgaard of Chanute announced the event with Guy P. Miller of Hutchinson, president of Kansas Humane Societies Associated, Inc., guiding the talk. Miller had told the press of reports alleging dogs and cats were mistreated, including claims of burning and animal cruelty, which city officials deny.
Jerome J. O'Brien of Midland Texas is appointed director of the Interior Department's office of oil and gas. The move places the official in charge of federal policy and management of offshore and onshore energy resources.
Mrs May Virginia Wallace aged 75 of Mound City and wife of State Rep. John W Wallace of Linn County died today at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott Kansas. The report notes her death occurred in the Fort Scott facility with her husband connected to Linn County politics.
Neosho County reported a quiet Labor Day with only two injuries and several non injury crashes. Mrs. Retha Grady faced charges after a 1954 Buick rear ended a pickup on Santa Fe, while a 4 year old boy sustained a cut from a tri cycle incident. Sheriff and highway patrol logged 20 moving violations and 164 moving hazard arrests across the 15 county division.
Ottis Autry owner and manager reports about 135 registered at the Westview Nursing Home open house held at 1600 W 2nd. The 52 bed facility completed construction last week with residents moving in yesterday. Visitors may tour the home anytime and view its four wings including bedrooms kitchen dining area and the main lobby.
Five minor accidents occurred on the Kansas Turnpike over Labor Day weekend with no injuries. Two crashes were caused by illegal U turns and the drivers were ticketed. Traffic volume eased to about 75,262 vehicles from Friday evening to Tuesday morning, below last year’s 78,000, amid rainy conditions. Holiday travel reached an estimated 4,550,000 miles with 16 arrests, 13 for speeding.
The Chamber of Commerce retailers meet tomorrow at 2 30 p m at the Tioga Hotel to discuss business promotions and plan a merchants bazaar tied to the annual Mexican fiesta on September 15 16. A chamber luncheon follows at 11 30 a m at the Tioga with a general business session resuming after August recess.
Nadine Ann Hoagland a 20 year old Erie resident was awarded 5500 in district court for injuries medical expenses and loss of income from a car collision on July 2 1960 on US 160 east of Parsons. The suit was brought by her mother Celia Hoagland against Donald E Heady of Parsons R I.
