Mrs. Glenn Allison of 1514 South Central reported her two pound toy terrier Tiny missing after a clothes dryer service call. The plumber freed the dog from a four inch vent, noting it could not bark due to tight quarters.
In Paola Kansas AP Donald Allen Hurst 17 of Kansas City was struck and killed while walking along a road near Bucyrus. A companion Nick Kelne 17 was hit and injured. State Highway Patrol identified the driver as Thomas Schwarz of Bucyrus.
Larry O Hutchinson arm an seaman serving aboard the destroyer USS Gurke with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific is the son of Mr and Mrs Ira Q Hutchinson of 501 W 1st.
Midland Texas AP report says a 13 year old girl and her tattooed partner John Meyers 32 confessed to four killings on a spree from Illinois to Texas. Victims include Carole Ballard 11 and her father George Ballard 47 in Illinois. Miss Margaret Wernicker 39 of St Louis. Lee De Kraai found near Midland Texas. The couple claimed robbery as motive and $16 total taken. Meyers known friend of the Stone family in Chicago. Donna Marie Stone 13 said to be living with grandparents in Edwardsville Illinois. The pair earlier charged with kidnapping Wernicker. Meyers said he would take the rap.
August police reports show bonds and fines totaling 484, with 336 from parking meters and a yearly total of 2,685. There were 1,347 parking meter tickets, 236 calls for service, 49 arrests, 5 DWI arrests, 22 traffic accidents with two injuries, and 385 meals served to prisoners in nine months. The Wichita car theft was recovered.
Chanute Public Library begins winter hours from 10 am to 9 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am to 5 pm Saturdays. The facility will close for Labor Day. Summer closing times were 6 pm on weekdays and 1 pm on Saturdays.
Carl V. Yates 50 of Earlton was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge after a collision at 21st and Santa Fe on US 169. His 1950 Buick rear ended a 1954 Ford driven by Clayton R. Beebe 15 of Erie as Beebe turned toward amusement ground. Beebe and three other youths were in the Ford. Terry Kaiser 14 of Erie suffered a head bump. Yates and Beebe had injuries. Beebe’s car valued at $400, Yates’ car a total loss. Bond set today in Thayer justice court.

One allows refusal due to medical risk signed by a physician, another cites religious beliefs with parental signature, and the third notes personal reasons with parent or guardian consent.
In Prairie Village Kansas a car left the road and crashed into a service station killing 16 year old David E Broyles of Mission and injuring three others Ellen Gough 18 of Merriam John Sherman 17 of Overland Park and Daniel Garrett 18 of Mission The car destroyed plate glass at the station and all injuries occurred at the scene or en route to hospital.
Doctors at Hickam Air Force Base prepared to study a Discoverer XXIX nose cone recovered near Hawaii. The capsule carried human tissue, a three day old chicken heart, bone, influenza virus, radiation dosimeters, two non infectious viruses, soil bacteria, algae, human serum albumin and bread mold. The nose cone would be flown to Sunnyvale for analysis and then the tissue to Brooks AFB for testing its exposure to space.
