Left Hand Pitch three teenage Chanute boys were apprehended by Walker Camp in the act of entering his watermelon patch. Camp had monitored the patch since the weekend when about 25 melons were reported stolen and vines damaged. The trio, not previously seen in the patch, were released to their parents with a reprimand.
Police cited two drivers for failure to yield after crashes yesterday. Mike Gillihan's 1947 Chevrolet hit Patrick Tubbs's 1946 Chevrolet at Fourth and Evergreen with both fronts damaged. Gillihan posted a 5 bond. David Joe Brown's 1954 Chevrolet hit Helen Olson's 1951 Ford at 102 E Main, damaging right rear fender of Olson and right fenders of Brown. Brown's hearing set for Sept. 10. A 1954 Plymouth driven by Ralph Lindquist was damaged in a minor collision at Main and Lafayette. Harry Scott drove the other car. Joe Dennis Mills and Lester Greve had uninvestigated damage reports.
Gov. George Docking urged scrutiny of state payroll noting 22 000 employees in February and 20 000 in May. He said Kansas' state to population ratio is now double its 1941 level. A survey of 28 states suggests Kansas would have about 16 500 employees if it matched those ratios. He conceded no clear remedy, pledging effort toward efficiency while citing new functions as a major growth factor.
TOPEKA The index of prices received by Kansas farmers for all commodities fell three points in the month ending August 15. The Crop Reporting Service noted lower prices for wheat corn barley grain sorghum beef cattle and chickens outweighed higher prices for hay calves sheep lambs milk and eggs.
The 46th annual Homecoming Picnic and Fair began in Thayer as Harry M. Minnich, the surviving original fair committee member, rests after a Sunday heart attack in satisfactory condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital. A bed sheet stolen from 420 N Grant Wendell Bowyer by A. W. Gibson of Houston and Ernest Shepard of Humbledt led to $50 fines each in police court for petty larceny. Shepard also paid $10 for an outstanding traffic summons. Also in court, Raymond W. Rice pleaded guilty to intoxication and indecent exposure, receiving 30 days in jail on each count to run concurrently, with prior sentence parole revoked. Donald M. Whitworth pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and paid $25. Harry B. Goodnough pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of private property and received three months in jail with parole.
A 15-year-old girl, Dorothy Geraldine Counts, was attacked by white students and spectators with rocks and sticks as she left a Charlotte high school after registering as the first student of her race there. She was walking homeward with a crowd nearby but was not injured.
Oklahoma reports ongoing anthrax vaccination in northeastern counties. State veterinarian Dr. M. Reimenschneider says several thousand livestock are vaccinated daily and about 200,000 animals have been covered. The disease, responsible for over 700 animal deaths this summer in five counties, is now under control. Missouri lifts embargoes on shipments from Mayes Craig and Ottawa counties.
Kansas City Power and Light and three IBEW locals remained at an impasse over their wage contract as state officials urged resolution. The stalemate persisted amid labor tensions and ongoing negotiations.
About 30 adults and children were removed from the Cunard liner Ivernia last night as medical authorities identified Asian flu symptoms among passengers and crew.
Governor Faubus ordered 250 guardsmen to block nine Negro students from enrolling at Central High School as federal courts urged immediate integration. El Dorado dog catcher Fred Smith reports six dogs fled yesterday with possible help from a small boy. Smith remains hopeful for their recapture and return.
The board debated a five-student minimum for a special education class for severely handicapped children with IQs under 50, considering renting space or church facilities. State law would provide aid of 1500 plus 100 for each non resident up to 800, with local rent as the expense.
Topeka couple Mr. and Mrs. J Bliss McCormick complete a 32 year travel mission visiting a capital per state and country in North America. The trip north to St Johns Newfoundland and south to Warrenton Virginia marks the end of their long summer journey home to Topeka with thoughts of possible travel beyond North America in 1958. They began to educate two sons through travel and plan to revisit several places.
Mr and Mrs Edward Doc Williams report three masked men entered their Lenexa Kansas home last night tied up the family and fled with 68 in cash a 1500 mink stole and assorted jewelry. The robbers escaped in the couple s station wagon after ripping out four telephones. Also present were their 14 month old son Williams mother in law and siblings in law and niece. Mrs Williams freed herself and alerted the Johnson County sheriff s office.
Light snow fell in Newmarket Ontario early today miles north of Toronto but melted before reaching the ground.
E. E. Lofgren retires as vice president of the First National Bank effective Sept 1 after 49 years with the bank. He will remain a director and has served as cashier and president in past years. Larry S. Wilson was named vice president at a Tioga Hotel dinner in Lofgren's honor.
A distraught Kansas mother, Mrs. William Appel of La Crosse, flown by Air Force to bedside of her son Lt. Jack Appel and his wife in Sweden after their crash near Vasteraas. Senator Carlson arranged the transport from Philadelphia to Sweden on an Air Force plane.
Emporia marked its centennial with a grand event in July but the celebration posted no profit. Underwriters led by local businessmen pledged 9600 dollars and will receive 85 percent back, with further disbursement possible when final books close, says Harold Trusler, president of Emporia Centennial, Inc.

President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower arrived in Newport Rhode Island for a vacation as the Navy guest. He rode in an open car to Washington Square and thanked the cheering crowd. He noted Mrs. Eisenhower’s improving health and said she would visit local historic sites soon. The couple will stay in a 12 room white stucco house offered by Rear Adm. Cromwell. Weather permitting they may stay until near Britain's Queen Elizabeth visit, with some flights planned to Washington for conferences.

A B66 bomber from Hurlburt Field Florida crashed into an oil tank near Danbury Texas last night starting a large fire. The three crewmen parachuted and were injured. Capt. Arthur J. Manzo 30 First Lt. David E. Moore 25 and Sgt. Albert J. Newland 26 identified by Ellington AFB as the crew. Manzo reported critical with skull fracture Moore broken ankle Newland fractured arm.
The Justice Department announced the indictment of 46 persons in New York for conspiring to import narcotics from France and distribute them nationwide. The indictment, returned July 28 and sealed to permit arrests, also named 16 others as coconspirators but not as defendants.
A Navy jet piloted by Lt. John R. Renshaw crashed into two unoccupied suburban Berkeley homes, killing the pilot and leaving the Schneiders and Meyers families facing charred ruins. Neighbors recalled how close the families were to being home during the incident.
Millard Drisdell owner of Drisdell Studio buys the former Noel Wood studio and will operate 3 W Main as The Chanute Studio. Portraits will be a specialty with amateur supplies stocked and full studio service. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. closed Thursdays. Wood relocated to Wichita after a temporary darkroom in Galesburg since Aug 20.
Richard Chambers, 32, was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft in a building being torn down. He was in serious condition with a broken leg and severe cuts after two days crying for help. An unidentified woman reported hearing a baby’s cry nearby.
