UPI reports America's Viking 2 is scheduled to land on Mars at 5:58 p.m. CDT to probe for moisture and potential life near dunes in the Utopia region. Enthusiasm Survives Rain at Thayer Homecoming Queen Crowned

The 1976 Thayer Homecoming Queen was crowned at McLachlen Park after rain delayed the event by an hour. Nancy Erbe of Thayer won the crown, with runners up Linda Hurst and Shelly Deweese. Sponsors included Whitson Lumber, Hurst, Thayer Derby, and Brooks Produce. A seed watermelon tasting followed, with James Powers winning the adult seed spitting contest and Wade Holtzman and Steve Ward claiming the junior and pee wee divisions respectively.

Unemployment Rises to 7.9 Percent in August

U S unemployment increased in August to 7.9 percent the highest level this year the Labor Department said. The report shows 7.5 million unemployed up from 7.4 million with teens driving the rise as the rate for teenagers climbed to 19.7 percent.
