Gov. William H. Avery warns that 4000 miles of Kansas highway are substandard and the system worsens. He outlines options to accelerate construction, including taxes and tolls, and promotes a $600 million, 1,400 mile state freeway network to serve noninterstate areas.
Chicago AP reports the National Safety Council forecasts 87 million cars on the roads over the three day weekend and a record 8.9 billion miles driven. An estimated 500 to 600 people could die in traffic crashes if drivers ignore weather and traffic conditions.
Clyde Hughey Hermon 23 of Roeland Park Kansas received a three year probation after pleading guilty to three charges of understating bank accounts by 141.19 dollars at the Bank of Pleasanton in October 1964. He had worked there as a cashier or clerk prior to the plea. The case was heard in the U S District Court.
Hurricane Betsy moved past the Bahamas with potential to miss land as forecasters said the 150 mph storm could travel offshore. The storm’s path remained uncertain, leaving Miami awaiting updates on possible impacts.
Chanute police chief Lige Matlock and Sgt. Charles Record arrived from Charleston as state's witnesses in the trial of John Edwards Jr. and Robert Edwards for burglary tool possession and an $18,000 jewelry store burglary in Mattoon. The pair were arrested in April. evidence included a hack saw blade and jewelry seized from their car. A Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent joined the Illinois trip.
Mrs. Margaret Roberts, 75, was asphyxiated in a northwest Wichita home fire. Neighbors entered via a rear door, found her unconscious on the kitchen floor, and fire crews worked about 45 minutes before she died on arrival at a hospital. The fire centered in a sofa with little other damage reported.
The area forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with little temperature change through Saturday and numerous thunderstorms tonight. Highs in the 80s to low 90s, lows tonight in the 50s to 60s, with showers and thunderstorms expected across eastern Kansas tonight and Saturday.
The priceless 100 carat DeLong ruby, seized by criminals after weeks of tips, is paid for with 25 000 dollars in cash and will return to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It was found Thursday night in a musty public telephone booth along the Sunshine State Parkway.

Vietnamese troops found heavy stocks of Viet Cong ammunition and about 1,000 uniforms in a wooded area near Saigon amid a B52 bombing sweep. A reinforced company scouted the zone 20 miles north-northwest of Saigon without contact. In Da Nang area, about 1,400 Marines arrived at Chu Lai to reinforce the base as total Marine strength nears 31,200.
John Dyer of Derby proposes a $3 million mountain near Beaumont in the Flint Hills east of Wichita. He plans to level a 360 foot mound to 1,200 feet with two slopes 2300 and 1800 feet long, four lifts, a lodge, homesites, and snow-making equipment. He has raised $18,500 amid mixed reaction.
India formally protested to Secretary of State Rusk over American supplied tanks and arms used by Pakistan in Kashmir. New Delhi said Pakistan would not have invaded without U S equipment. Ambassador Nehru reminded Rusk Eisenhower pledged defense use only.
