Vietnam combat toll tops 100 for first time in five weeks

The U S Command reports 102 Americans killed last week in Vietnam up 24 from the prior week and 2 303 enemy deaths while Saigon lists 297 battlefield dead. Wounded Americans total 530 as tally for 1961 begins. A northwest Saigon battle last Friday kills 10 Americans.

Prince Philip Opens Vancouver City Hall Annex in Rain

Prince Philip officiated at the opening of a $2 million annex to Vancouver City Hall as about 200 spectators watched in the rain. He joked that he had prepared a long dissertation on local government but would skip it due to the weather.

Fire consumes Hoilington man’s home

Salvador Terrez, a retired railroad worker in Hoilington Kansas, loses his home and belongings in a Wednesday night fire. Crippled by arthritis, he escaped to an outdoor toilet in only shorts and shirt, then crawled half a mile to a neighbor’s house to call the fire department, but the house and its contents were destroyed before firefighters arrived.

Bank sent cards to five year old. mother destroys them

In Tampa Anthony Benitez, a five year old, received two unsolicited credit cards from a local bank and was unable to read or write. His mother destroyed the cards explaining the child is learning to write his name. A bank spokesman said the credit bureau checked him out okay.

Duped n Duped: Bronx sting nets seven charged with bartering

A group of seven men was seized in a Bronx school district sting as police charged them with bartering heroin and cocaine for stolen TVs radios clothes and jewelry with elementary and high school pupils. Detectives fought dope peddlers while hundreds of children fled as officers seized 75 heroin bags four cocaine capsules and nearly $250 in coins from pupils lunch money.

House votes to cite FCC chairman for contempt

The House Commerce Committee voted 20 to 13 to cite FCC Chairman Rosel H. Hyde for contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over subpoenaed records in a license renewal case involving WIRE AM FM Indianapolis. Rep Harley O Staggers said he would discuss scheduling with House leaders.

Senate OK For Wells and Burch To FCC Posts

The Senate confirmed Dean Burch a former Republican national chairman to chair the FCC and Robert Wells a Kansas broadcaster to serve as an FCC member. The nominations were approved by voice vote. A weather-caused dance relocation and a fatal house fire in Wichita were also reported.

Chanute Receives HUD Plan Certification For City

Chanute is certified as having a workable HUD program, effective Saturday for two years. Acting city manager Jack Brennan and housing planner Ralph Watson led the effort with city housing authority chair Dale McCoy praising the milestone and outlining next steps to complete a federally funded low income and elderly housing program.

The area faces occasional light drizzle mixed with snow tonight ending Friday, with colder winds shifting to northwest. Topeka reports frigid temps and precipitation, as a storm moves eastward across southern Kansas. Overnight snowfall reached up to eight inches in northwest Kansas, with Bird City reporting the top amount.
