Kansas tax collections across federal state and local levels reached 2.34 billion for 1969, up 382.49 million from 1968 and nearly double the 1961 survey figure. Federal 1.49 billion, state 389.82 million, local 466.1 million. Property, sales, income and motor taxes dominate revenue.
Gov. Lester Maddox directed removal of warning signs near Ludowici and said he would fund them from the emergency fund. He indicated the signs may be guarded by state troops and hinted at possible bridge repairs on a nearby U.S. 301 span that could close for about 18 months.
A widening fissure on a 200 foot cliff at Paseo del Mar Drive in San Pedro, California sent a 30 foot down the edge home toward the Pacific in 15 minutes. Water main ruptured and power shut off as residents evacuated. Authorities warn six other oceanfront properties are slipping toward the sea at an undetermined rate.

Massachusetts officials halted bear hunting until midnight November 1 after a 300 pound female and a 100 pound male were seen in Franklin County. James M. Shepard said the emergency action was due to the bears being drunk from fermenting wild apple juice.

The community schedules Halloween activities Thursday and Friday including a street dance, UNICEF drive, junior high activities at St Patrick's, and a senior high homecoming parade and dances. Coordinated by school student councils to prevent pranks after a fatal accident years ago.
Spooks and goblins march Friday evening at 6 from Grant and Main east to Highland then First to Memorial Building. Kiwanis sponsors the 22nd Halloween parade with kindergarteners meeting at 5:30 on Main and Grant for costume judging.
An unidentified man entered the Tioga Hotel at 2:50 a.m. and robbed the night desk clerk Charlene Doty of 169 dollars in small bills. Police are investigating the early morning theft.
The Neosho County Association for Retarded Children aims to open a day care center in Chanute by November 17 with planned attendance of ten to twelve children. Two volunteer teachers will run sessions three days weekly at 9 to 11 a.m. in the North Malcolm Community Center. The center, not state licensed yet, will be funded by donations and seeks a trained teacher before licensing. A meeting Monday will finalize opening details.
Weather forecast shows light rain across Kansas with cooler temperatures today and Thursday. A hotel robbery in Topeka involves a slender 5'4" gunman who obtained money from Miss Doty and restrained two staff members. suspects are being pursued with several leads.
Read's Department Store opens Thursday marking the conversion from Calvert's. Bob Sanford, Chanute store manager, notes enlarged women's apparel, carpeted areas, and extra space for piece goods. Sanford, 35, and wife Charlotte, 33, grew up in Coffeyville and have two children. They attend the Presbyterian church.
GOP leaders call Gov Docking's warning of a fiscal crisis a contrived scare. Senate President Pro Tem Glee Smith and House Speaker Calvin Strowig demand public explanation of perceived budget inconsistencies. Docking cites agencies seeking to manage a record 883 million in fiscal 1971, including 396.13 million general funds, up 82 million from the current year.
