Surprise Attack Near Saigon Wipes Out Viet Cong Unit

U S infantrymen surprised a Viet Cong company near the Cambodian border and nearly wiped it out with artillery napalm and air strikes. Eighty enemy troops were killed. U S losses included three dead and three wounded. Independent of the battle, U S fighter bombers pressed the air war on Haiphong and Cat Bi bases as monsoon weather approached.

Traffic Fatalities Mount Across Kansas Weekend

Six people died in Kansas traffic crashes over the weekend. Eula Fitch died in a car truck crash near Norton. Mar vin Smith was injured. A Ft. Riley soldier Dwight Kehler and Jesse Dunn died in a Marysville crash. Phyllis Jessee perished on the Kansas Turnpike near Lawrence. David Boren and William Blau were others involved. ten more fatalities occurred on Missouri roads. Information from the Associated Press.

Halloween Program Night One At Chanute Schools

Cosmos 186 and 188 Complete Automatic Orbital Docking

The Soviet Union announced automatic docking of two unmanned Cosmos spacecraft in orbit. Cosmos 186, launched Friday, and Cosmos 188, launched today, joined in orbit at 12:20 p.m. Moscow time in an unprecedented test of Soyuz type hardware.

Hostage Wound. Former Suitor Kills Self in Cleveland

In a third floor suburb, 23 year old Robert Batch wounded 19 year old Lida Caldwell at gunpoint over the weekend and then killed himself. Batch died at Doctors Hospital while Caldwell underwent surgery in reasonably good condition. Police said Batch had used Caldwell as a shield and warned he would shoot her and himself if anyone intervened. Mrs Caldwell’s mother had flown in from Johnstown, Pennsylvania to intervene.

Iowa Firm Buys Emporia Plant

Iowa Beef Packers Inc. agreed to acquire two Armour facilities, one at Emporia Kansas and one in West Point Nebraska, both currently not operating. Armour bought Iowa Beef Packers hog slaughter facility in Sioux City Iowa. The transaction was announced jointly with Armour acquiring one Iowa facility.

Death at Halloween Party in Van Nuys

Kenneth A Lindstrand a 32 year old salesman was killed at a private Halloween party in a Van Nuys apartment. Guests mistook the shooting for a skit and the assailant fled after two shots struck Lindstrand and a wall. Detectives questioned guests but had no killer identified.

Spooks n Goblins Parade Announces Halloween Event

The Kiwanis sponsored Spooks n Goblins Parade set for tomorrow evening weather permitting. Children in K through 6th grade may join the parade starting 6 30 p m at Main and Forest with judging at six, route to Memorial Building for prize awards. Prizes pay 150, 100, and 50 cents.

Fire Fatal for 19 Month Old in Lee's Summit House Blaze

A 19 month old boy, Danny Leroy Stark, died in a hospital from burns and smoke inhalation after a fire at his home in Lee's Summit Missouri. He was trapped in a second floor crib when a water heater explosion sent flames through the home. a firefighter carried him down a ladder. The parents are Mr and Mrs Richard Stark who also have a three year old son.

Storm death toll rises in Gulfport city

Gulfport Mississippi reports at least two killed and scores injured as high winds from a tornado or waterspout strike the coast. Witnesses describe a restaurant and motels flattened and many mobile homes toppled with occupants inside.

Couple Held Captive By Two Armed Men

Kansas City AP report details Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gray held captive in their home by two armed men who forced their way in after asking to use a telephone due to car trouble. Gray, district supervisor of Household Finance Co., said the intruders ransacked the house seeking money.
