An inquiring reporter asked Kansans if daylight saving time helped or hindered their activities as clocks move back to Central Standard Time at 2 a.m. Read responses ranged from hindered housework and harder wakeups to little or no noticeable difference and mixed opinions.
Temperatures rise in parts of Kansas with a cold front expected Sunday. Winds shift with a chance of scattered light rain. Highs in the upper 50s and lows in the 40s. Reported Friday highs ranged from 48 at Ft. Riley to 67 at Liberal.
Chanute kicks off its eighth annual Halloween program with Honor Cards to curb vandalism. Activities include dances, movies at Peoples Theatre, a spook parade for younger children, football games, UNICEF Trick or Treat drive, gym events, and art displays.

In Arcadia Florida the father of seven killed by insecticide poisoning swore he bought 1000 life policies on each child the night before. The agent said the policies never took effect because the first week’s premium of about four dollars wasn’t paid.
Saigon reports American warplanes struck the Hanoi Hai Phong region for a fifth straight day. North Vietnamese broadcasts claim five pilots were shot down and captured. The U S Command cites 131 Communist soldiers killed near Danang and 19 U S dead with 75 wounded in ground fighting near Tam Ky and Hoi An.
High winds from Lake Erie battered Buffalo area with gusts up to 96 mph sinking scores of small boats and damaging many others. At Brant 19 people were evacuated from cottages, while three missing boys were found safe after dawn. Total damage estimated over 150000 dollars as water spilled from Cattaraugus Creek and Coast Guard logged the strongest gust.
