Ghostly Paintings Haunt Main Street Windows

Main Street store windows displayed ghostly spook paintings with 900 students from fourth grade to high school entering the Halloween art contest for cash prizes. The event kicked off Chanute’s three day celebration with a Lock Hop in the Senior High gym, followed by a spook film triple feature at Peoples Theater and a dance at the National Guard Armory. UNICEF drive at Royster Junior High, 16th annual Kiwanis Spook Parade, and honor-card admission with vandalism penalties marked the activities.

UN votes deny Red China membership bid

The General Assembly rejected Red China’s latest bid for U.N. membership by 42 in favor, 5 against and 12 abstaining, far from a two thirds threshold. Train Wreck Kills Two and Injures Dozens in California

In Anaheim a gravel truck smashed into a speeding San Diegan train bound for San Diego. The collision split the seven car train. four cars derailed and rocks and flames blew through coaches. The truck driver died in the crash and a passenger also perished. more than 30 passengers were injured.

Advisory Unit For Planning Is Tabled

The chamber of commerce area planning committee tabled creation of an unofficial advisory planning council while city commission moves toward appointing an official planning board. Mayor Lapham proposed a list challenged by Commissioners Evans and Althaber as not fully representative. The group may still pursue planning groundwork if no compromise emerges soon. Three Women Charged in Oakland Robbery Case

In Oakland California three young women were arrested Monday and charged with robbing men at gunpoint after luring them into a rented car. Jean Burks 23 was arrested returning the car to an agency. Ellen Marshall 23 and Delores Jackson 30 of Berkeley were later arrested.

Forecast highs range from 65 to 70 in the north and about 75 in the southwest, with tonight's lows near 35 to 40.
