A new river gauge was installed on the Neosho east of town as a public service by Carl Wortman and the city water plant crew. It is attached to the river intake and calibrated to the official federal gauge, with four hours of work using ropes and ladders.
A Wichita boy, Jerry Wayne White, 10, died in a Sunday home fire. His mother, Mrs. Jewel Marvin White, 29, and two younger sons Eldon, 10 months, and John, 2, were burned. Firemen believe the boy may have been playing with matches as the blaze started while others were at church or in the yard.
Burglars chiseled and drilled a safe at Larkin's IGA in Marysville Sunday night and escaped with 3864 dollars in cash and checks. The robbers also ate a watermelon and drank three quarts of milk during the break in.

Richard W. Crawford of Collingswood New Jersey was named manager of the Chanute Warwick Wax division refinery of Western Petrochemical Corp. He replaces Glen Hatfield who resigned for an oil company post in Michigan. Crawford, 36, has moved to Chanute and will bring his family in two weeks. He has three sons and a Penn State degree. He previously produced paraffin and microcrystalline waxes with Atlantic Refining Co. and served as a pilot in World War II and Korea.
Burglars cracked a safe at Gockel's IGA in St. Mary's Sunday night and escaped with 1146 in checks and currency, Sheriff W P McKinnon said.
