Citizens vote in a non binding poll on proposed official national flower. Florists around the country host ballots with more than 30 flowers listed and a write in option. Votes collected at stores like Hans Herold of 1000 S Central. Results to be announced in Congress.
Orval Cox, area census crew leader from Fredonia, seeks at least seven workers to assist in Wilson County and part of Neosho County for a three to four week 1959 Census of Agriculture. Training starts Nov 11 in a central location, possibly Altoona, with questionnaires sent to local farmers a week before field visits.
William Murphy, director of Alcohol Beverage Control, says he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor if Gov. George Docking does not run for reelection. Murphy, a former Chanute resident, joins a growing list of Democrats ready to challenge for the office and notes he would not run against Docking if he seeks another term.
A hurricane with heavy rains swept western Mexico causing at least 26 deaths and near destruction of a town. Separate reports from Topeka and London note high fatality figures in Europe as a severe storm system continues, with cumulative 1959 deaths near 469 and rising.
President Eisenhower said he and French President de Gaulle, Britain's Prime Minister Macmillan, and West Germany's Adenauer are ready for a Western summit about mid December though no site or precise time has been set. He noted De Gaulle's concerns and that Paris could host, with discussions proceeding via diplomatic channels.
The Ottawa South Highway Assn will gather in Parsons Friday night with invitation extended to city representatives along the proposed route in Kansas and Oklahoma. Kansas director Maurice A. Martin and fourth division head Jack L. Goodrich plan to attend, as will northeastern Oklahoma officials. The group backs a route from Ottawa for an inter state designation replacing the old U S 69 south from Kansas City. The Kansas Highway Commission approved the Ottawa south plan, but bureau submission hinges on Oklahoma approval, which has been removed from its agenda.
Simeon Oliver Nutchuck spoke at the Talk of the Month Club detailing Alaska’s resource development funded by federal matching highway funds. He cited lightning growth in Anchorage and population shifts, a $177 million lumber plant employing 9,000, and outside capital flowing into the industry while noting Alaska’s harsh climate and cultural adjustments.

Highway patrolmen rushed an emergency blood shipment from Springfield to Joplin but it arrived after Harry Crandell, 69, of Baxter Springs, Kansas, had died from a ruptured abdominal artery. Doctors treated him for six hours and used 10 pints of type B positive blood before the hospital ran out. a later shuttle brought four more pints but Crandall did not survive.
Senator Thruston Morton, Republican national chairman, arrives in Kansas City on the same airliner as Maria Callas. Photographers swarm as a black sedan pulls up, and Morton jokes about being mistaken for the president. He notes one Republican remains valuable.
A district court jury found Howard York guilty of second degree manslaughter in the stabbing death of his roommate Caldwell Culton behind the Chicken Shack at 818 N. Santa Fe. The court set sentencing for later to determine if a new trial will be requested. The verdict followed a two day trial with York testifying in his own defense. Culton had a prior record and York admitted stabbing Culton with a five inch knife but claimed self defense as Culton attacked him. The dead man, 36, was stabbed in the left cheek and throat. York, 28, and Culton had operated a car together since 1956 as intermittent associates.
Weather summary from Topeka notes increasing cloudiness and a system from the Rockies bringing occasional rain. Forecaster Garrett predicts rain tonight in the northwest and across the state by evening with highs mainly in the 40s to upper 60s and lows in the 30s. Maximums Tuesday ranged from 49 to 55 and lows from 30 to 40 across several cities.
A Halloween parade rolls Friday night with students from grades 1 through 6 lining Main Street and Forest according to blocks north and south of the intersection. Judges will award prizes for seven grade levels while a Memorial Building party follows the parade with seating arranged by grade level.

Robert C. Kelley of Chanute was found guilty by a jury after a 28 minute deliberation for attempting to set fire to a car. Sentencing stayed pending defense time for a possible new trial. James Foster of Chanute represented Kelley. No other jury trials will occur this term. the jury panel reports in Erie at 9 am on November 9 for trials.
Patients at the Southeast Kansas Tuberculosis Hospital held a going-away party for Dr. James Brown who joined in 1957. About 40 attendees celebrated his move to North Bay Ontario Canada to a TB chest clinic. The event featured youth talent acts and a gift from Irvin Jenkins.
Washington AP reports the Air Force released 31.9 million dollars for Schilling Air Force Base at Salina Kansas. The funds cover a missile launching station re entry vehicle facility missile assembly building liquid oxygen plant a communications support facility and utilities. Rep J Floyd Breeding says the move funds key base construction for national defense.
The 70 story tower at 40 Wall Street and the world’s fourth tallest office building sold at auction for 18 150 000. William Zeckendorf of Webb and Knapp acquired it on Tuesday in New York.
President Sekou Toure of Guinea and Mrs. Toure visit the White House to meet President and Mrs. Eisenhower and then plan a nationwide tour.
