Police investigated several non injurious traffic accidents yesterday. At Island Highland a 1962 Ford driven by Jack Hively and a 1957 Mercury owned by Mrs. W C Markley sustained minor damage. A Chanute Farmers Co op truck backed into a parked 1957 Ford station wagon. In a market lot a 1960 Chevrolet backed into a 1956 Ford, causing headlight and turn signal damage.
The White House said Russia must stop work on Cuban missile sites and render Cuban offensive weapons inoperable before the United States considers any settlement proposals. Khrushchev offered to remove missiles from Cuba if the U S trades rockets from Turkey. The White House warned the Cuban threat must be eliminated first and denounced several inconsistent proposals from Moscow.
The United States told the United Nations that the Soviet push to complete missile sites in Cuba is dangerous. Adlai Stevenson delivered the warning after Thant disclosed talks aimed at avoiding a sea confrontation during the U.S. blockade. Khrushchev pledged to keep Soviet ships out of the interception area while Thant pursues a peaceful settlement.
In Buffalo AP report Dr. James A. Smith of Syracuse University warns American schoolchildren face excessive pressure to achieve high marks and little affection. He cites early academics squeezing creativity and predicts many children may become neurotics or worse due to relentless stress.
The National Safety Council reports 29,600 traffic deaths from January to September 1962, surpassing 1956’s prior record. September deaths total 3,960, the highest since 1941. Nine-month death rate is 5.1 per 100 million miles driven, with city index leaders including Washington D C St Louis Cleveland Torrance Topeka Yonkers.
Two Jehovahs Witnesses members Gary McIntosh and Ronald Homer King were each sentenced to two years in prison in Kansas City for violating the selective service act. Both men, ages 23 and 24, faced federal charges in a Friday court appearance.

The Neosho County UNESCO sponsored the fifth annual event at the Hutton school auditorium drawing nearly 200 people from the area. Forty seven foreign students from Pittsburg Fort Scott Independence Coffeyville Parsons Lawrence and Chanute attended. Henry Watkins Erie UNESCO chairman served as master of ceremonies. Dwight Diver handed out honorary citizen certificates as students spoke about their countries. Some guests sang native songs. Attendance was below last year's 63 students.

Sheriff Jerry Sloan investigated noting entry via a pried open west window and valuing the items at about 650 dollars with listed prices for each item.

Top line shows Dole ahead of Breeding 2886 to 2218 with 367 undecided. Carlson leads Smith 3512 to 1237. Pearson ahead of Aylward 2915 to 1660 with 886 undecided. The 58 county district poll was by Hutchinson News Salina Journal and Garden City Telegram.

Nehru told Premier Khrushchev India is ready for honorable negotiations on a border settlement with China but only if Red Chinese withdraw behind the older line. The embassy described the message as outlining India’s position amid heavy fighting and Chinese artillery across the Himalayas.

Parts of the Northeast and northern Ohio faced over a foot of snow from an autumn storm causing hazardous highways, closed schools, and massive traffic jams. Snow totals reached 11 to 13 inches in New York, New England, and Ohio as temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s with record lows in several states.
Ninety seven residents registered at the Chanute city clerk's office last night for the November 6 general election bringing the week’s late registration total to 198. The registration books close until after the election and an official statewide figure will be released in a few days after checks. City Clerk Howard Parsons stated.
Two Chamber of Commerce committees schedule meetings for next week. The area planning committee will meet at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Tioga Hotel for a breakfast session and to nominate members for a Citizens Advisory Planning Council. On Wednesday, the public relations committee meets at 3:30 p.m. in the chamber office at the Memorial Building.
Six firemen killed after a wall and part of a second floor collapsed at the Sefu Fat and Soap Co building in Queens during a fire. More than 20 firefighters were trapped as the four alarm blaze raged, later brought under control. five were hospitalized and the watchman and assistant were unaccounted for.
Eldon Meade a 39 year old from Belpre Kansas died Friday night from injuries after a car truck collision on U S 50 west of Garden City Thursday authorities said Meade was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
