Navy boards freighter Maruela finds no prohibited arms

A US Navy boarding of the Lebanese flag freighter Maruela 180 miles northeast of Nassau found no prohibited arms aboard after inspecting cargo including 12 trucks and sulfur. The ship, chartered to the Soviet government, was allowed to continue to Havana with a full manifest checked by the escorting destroyers and a tracking air patrol.

Chanute United Fund Drive Reaches $10157 Mark

The Chanute United Fund drive climbed to 10157 through yesterday, a 542 rise in 24 hours. M L Morton education and publicity chairman said the drive is about even with last year. Returns show 856 contributors so far versus 2300 in 1961. Most pledges come from the classified division advance gifts. residential reports are few.

Wichita Patrolman Fatally Shot During House Standoff

A Wichita patrolman, Patrolman Dave Kenyon aged 39, was fatally shot early today during a struggle with Floyd Blockyou a 34 year old post office worker who had ordered the officers and his wife from the house. Blockyou was taken into custody after the confrontation at about 2 30 am. Kenyon had helped take Mrs Blockyou to police headquarters earlier to sign a complaint against her husband but she withdrew the action fearing jeopardy to his job.

Legion Post Backs Kennedy Cuban Crisis Move

Cha nute American Legion Post 170 voted unanimously to support President Kennedy's Cuban blockade. A wire to the President and copies to Senators Pearson and Carlson were authorized. The meeting included Veterans Day planning with a Main Street parade at 10:30 a.m. featuring bands, bugle corps, floats, and National Guard units.

Veterans Day Parade Float Contest Plans Announced

Topeka AP reports a Veterans Day parade with prizes for non commercial floats 35 25 15 and a 10 entering reward. Free hot dogs for participants at the fire station after the parade. Entries were due by Friday 9 am with 38 received by October 9 pm. A Civil War display for Veterans Day was cancelled amid the international situation. Stores may close based on merchants decisions.

Last Chance For Chanute Voters To Register Tonight

Last chance for residents to register for the November 6 general election. The city clerk’s office stays open until 9 p.m. for late registration as books close after today. Howard Parsons reports 101 registrations since late hours began, with 48 Friday and 36 Wednesday night.

U S district attorney Russell Millin said in a Thursday speech that one policy operator in Kansas City posted gross receipts of at least 300000 in a recent year. He said the numbers game and parlay cards dominate local gambling and that players feed underworld figures through their wagers.

Cost of Living Rises Sharply on Meat Prices

The Labor Department reports a 0.6 percent September rise in the consumer price index to 106.1 percent of the 1957-52 average, driven mainly by meat costs. Withholding by farmers and seasonal increases in eggs and clothing are cited. wholesale meat prices eased by mid-October, and retail prices fell about half the September increase. The Cuban crisis is not expected to affect US living costs, per Ewan Clague.

Methodist Sanctuary Dedication Sunday
