Enterprising students will display art in downtown windows as 300 pupils from fourth grade to 12th participate in the Art Marathon tonight from 6 to 9 pm. Teams of three paint windows. prizes total 45 for Senior High, 30 for Junior High, and 54 for lower grades. Judging Friday morning.
The Chanute Ministerial Alliance begins a house to house religious survey Sunday at 1:30 pm. Volunteers from member churches will canvass 90 sections to learn faith affiliation and Sunday attendance of Chanute residents. Families mark cards with names ages church preference and home address to aid follow up by churches.
A directed verdict acquitted Harold J. Gibbons and three other Teamsters Local 688 officials of violating the federal Corrupt Practices Act. Judge Moore ruled the government failed to prove the charges, calling the ruling a vindication of the union’s political contribution system.
A Kansas pilot and a second Air Force flyer die when a T-33 trainer crashes in a plowed field south of Minneapolis. Capt. Vernie J. Slang, 27, of Victoria Kansas, and Lt. Ronald K. Hibbert, 25, of Livingston New Jersey, parachuted but chutes did not deploy. The plane had taken off from Duluth and was en route to the Twin Cities Airport on an emergency.
Topeka AP report notes a new cold front moving into northwest Kansas tonight bringing more clouds and a drop in temperatures. The front should cross the state Friday and Friday night with possible thunderstorms in the east Friday night.
A grade crossing accident northwest of Wichita killed Leonard Niedens 17 and injured two girls Kay Worth 16 and Janet 14, both in fair condition with neck and shoulder injuries. Kay Worth drove the car and was struck by Missouri Pacific Passenger train No. 411, traveling about 55 mph. engineer J. W. Wyatt of Wichita reported. Mark Niedens 16, brother of Leonard, was not injured. the Niedens family resides in Wichita.
London bullion traders report bullion gold at 35.56 per ounce, its lowest in eight days of the scramble. The price sits 28 cents below Wednesday, with last week’s peak at 40.50 amid continued cautious demand. A dealer notes moderate buying and sees no clear end to the bubble. The U S Treasury price stands at 35 per ounce, normally within a penny of the London quote.
Mrs. Rose C. Turner 62 of Iola Kansas died in a Carthage hospital after injuries from a two car crash on U S 66 east of Carthage October 2. Five people were hospitalized. Turner’s husband Fred Turner was discharged. A daughter Diane 17 remains hospitalized. The other car occupants Mr and Mrs Gene Taylor of South Gate California were hospitalized in Springfield Missouri and have since been released.
Police investigated two non injury traffic accidents yesterday and a third was reported today. William s and Crumrine collided on Santa Fe near 21st in the 6 p.m. hour. Williams 1959 Plymouth and Crumrine 1953 Nash sustained $300 and $150 in damage respectively. A 1950 Pontiac backing into a parked 1953 Buick caused $20 damage. Judith Wright 15 faced a license restriction charge and posted a $10 bond. A 3rd incident at 3rd and Malcolm involved a 1955 Ford pickup and a 1950 Chrysler with minor damage.
In Junction City Kansas the Army reports a second soldier died from injuries after a truck plunged 40 feet on the Ft. Riley reservation. Recruit Roy W Burnette 23 of St Louis dies. Cpl Larry G Schlacht 23 with a wife and three children was killed earlier in the accident.
Chamber of Commerce directors approved one project and rejected two others citing financial factors. They voted to enter a float in the Virginia Carolina Chemical Corp parade next Thursday with a welcome theme and will appoint a committee to build it. They rejected a Christmas home decorations contest and resale tokens, favoring civic club promotion.
City Manager R J Hayes said Chanute Coffeyville Iola Ottawa Erie and Garnett express interest in linking municipally owned power plants. A Wichita convention group scheduled a followup meeting November 13 to discuss an engineering survey and interconnection details.
Mrs Dorothy Cormier age 47 widow and mother of a Forbes Air Force Base airman Clifford Cormier won 140000 dollars in the Irish Sweepstakes. She held a ticket on Midsummer Night II winner in the Cambridgeshire handicap at Newmarket England.
Chief Lige Matlock said three Chanute teenagers face pending charges for damaging Santa Fe Park property. Two admitted breaking windows in the rest room building at the park entrance and implicated the third.

In Picher Oklahoma an elderly widow, Ida C. Gary about 80, was killed by a gunshot to the head and chest during a family quarrel with her granddaughter Frances Armstrong who was critically wounded. Luther Armstrong 37, estranged husband of Frances, was jailed after telephoning from Treece Kansas. Gary Parker 6 was present in the home. Frances Armstrong faced a divorce hearing in Miami district court.
Chanute voters have today and tomorrow to register for the general election on November 8. The city clerk’s office will stay open 8 to 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow to finish registrations, then books close. Regular hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. continue. Night registration started Monday with 28, 26, and 25 voters registering on successive evenings. Past presidential years peaked at about 150 per night. Total registration numbers are not yet available.
Pittsburg State College narrowed a 41 candidate field for homecoming queen to four finalists. Finalists include Carolyn Schelin Verona Missouri Mary Mayer Chanute Kansas and twins Sharlene and Darlene Crane Kansas City Kansas as a single entry. The queen and attendants will be chosen by student vote Friday night. The homecoming climax features a parade with 65 high school bands and a football game between Pittsburg State and Washburn.
A Joplin filling station attendant James L. Rose was beaten with a hammer during a robbery. Charles Williams, 19, of Waco Mo., identified by Rose, signed a statement and surrendered $228.50. Williams was turned over to Newton County authorities for prosecution.
Topeka report shows wheat in storage on October 1 totaling 632,453,000 bushels, 12 percent above the prior Oct 1 record. Sorghum grain stored reached 74,718,000 bushels, up five percent from the previous record for the date.
In Caracas troops and police retook two buildings in the 23rd of January housing area from a Castro style revolutionary group. Five killed and 20 wounded as operations continued overnight. at least forty arrested and rifles seized. The violence follows Betancourt’s pledge the armed forces crushed revolutionists seeking Cuban methods.
Top U.S. officials question Soviet compliance with the nuclear test moratorium. Vice President Nixon echoed Atomic Energy Commission head John McCone, noting underground Soviet blasts detected without conclusive proof they were nuclear. Soviets deny the claim, while aides say Kennedy has seen similar information.
In Wichita, 16 month old Larry Blecha, son of Mr and Mrs John Blecha, wandered toward a ball and fell into a backyard drainage ditch. Neighbors and a fire department rescue squad could not revive him after efforts. Larry’s brother Mike, 3, alerted their mother to the incident.

Martin Luther King Jr. was ordered freed from the state penitentiary on a $2,000 bond pending appeal. Judge Oscar Mitchell had earlier jailed him for four months for violating probation tied to a traffic count from Atlanta lunch counter sit-ins. The appeal covers revocation of part of a suspended sentence for not holding a Georgia driver's license.
