Three teenage girls admitted to breaking and smearing eggs on a motor car owned by Mr. and Mrs. James Trabue at 202 S. Garfield. A school band drum inside the car was damaged and the girls agreed to pay. Police aim to capture other vandal groups as Halloween nears.
Soviet Foreign Minister V M Molotov expressed hope that the Geneva conference will bring a further reduction in global tensions. In Jerusalem Israel pressed for arms from major powers to defend against Middle East threats as Syrian papers urged decisive action by Britain and the United States against Israel. In Hardin Missouri two armed bandits robbed the State Bank of Hardin fleeing with about 12000. In Worthington Minnesota farm crowds urged Secretary Benson's removal as Senate Agriculture Committee discussed farm problems. In Washington prosecutors announced a drive to curb illegal stimulant drug sales to truck drivers with 42 arrest warrants issued across several states.
Atchison officials host a ribbon cutting for a new 11 mile straight pavement on US 59 from Atchison to Cummings. Fred Hall will preside at the dedication this afternoon, marking the elimination of nine right angle turns on the highway.
Hospital technicians and area professionals attended a Kansas State Board of Health School at the Junior College. The course titled Applied Parasitology and Antibiotic Sensitivity was led by Dr. Charles A. Hunter and staff from the State Board of Health. Lecturers included L Parsons and Frank Victor with other experts from Chamblee Georgia and the Communicable Disease Center.
The Air Force launches Operation Stop Watch to test Air National Guard readiness in Oklahoma Kansas and Texas. Brig Gen. William P. Nichols commands the 33rd Air Defense Division headquartered near Oklahoma City with six guard fighter-interceptor squadrons in the region. Regular Air Force advisers observe as aircraft controllers radar operators and crews prepare intercepts and timing is recorded to the second.
Wilsho Sub-district of Methodist Youth Fellowship held the annual Booth Festival at First Methodist church with eight churches and 95 youth plus counselors. Neodesha placed first in both display value and attractiveness, Fredonia second. total evaluation 351.34 to be sent to the Children’s Home in Newton and Home for the Aged in Topeka. Attending towns included Excelsior, High Prairie, Thayer, Galesburg, Fredonia, Neodesha, Erie and Chanute. Sue Powers of Thayer presided. Karen Penner of Chanute was treasurer.
In Nowata County Oklahoma a month old baby caused a crash when she stood on a car seat and grabbed the steering wheel. The car hit a power pole causing a 114 hour outage and leaving Mrs Brians of Bartlesville with minor injuries to her nose amid a damaged car and two culverts. No serious injuries were reported.
C E Eklund, longtime Chanute real estate and insurance broker, announces retirement November 1 after 47 years in business. The sale to Glen C McLaren will take effect then, with Eklund remaining a desk in the Main Street office. He plans fishing and managing loose ends, reflecting on a career begun on the Eklund farm west of Chanute. He has a son Edgar in Portland, a grandson, and two great grandchildren.
A swift line of squalls from Virginia to Massachusetts killed seven people and damaged property. Gusts reached 110 mph with tornado-like twists toppling trees and wrecking roofs. Affected areas faced cooler, windy conditions as storms passed in minutes.
Siamese twin girls born in Madison Wisconsin died last night after living only a day. They weighed about nine pounds combined and were joined at the abdomen with a single heart. Hospital attendants reported no identification for the family.
The government launches a $5 million pork products purchase program to aid the hog market. Secretary Benson said purchases will run through next August and not involve government storage. About 170 million pounds of pork and 30 million pounds of lard will be bought for school lunches, charities, and the needy.
A girl weighing one pound 12 and a half ounces was born at a Fort Scott hospital yesterday afternoon to Mr and Mrs Charles L Beckford of Fulton Kansas. The infant was placed in an incubator and both mother and baby were reported in excellent condition by attending physicians.
Flames from a wild oil and gas well in Hawkins Texas were put out near noon after water spray fog surrounded the well mouth. Firefighters led by Myron Kinney of Houston expected full control later in the day as residents were evacuated and crews risked nitro glycerine or cementing the casing if needed.
Kansas City reports the Kansas Public Junior College Association formed a legislative committee of deans and superintendents to pursue state aid for junior colleges. Chair Karl M. Wilson Coffeyville College announced with members Thiebaud Parsons Buford Fisher Klotz. The group aims to present a bill to the Kansas Legislature as enrollments are expected to double in ten years.
Joe L. Brown son of comedian Joe B. Brown was named general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for a one year term to succeed Branch Rickey Sr. His appointment marks a leadership change for the club.
Vienna reports Austria formally becomes free from foreign occupation ending 17 years of foreign control as church bells toll and flags fly in a national celebration.
Kansans press a broad river program for flood control and conservation seeking funds for 19 projects in Missouri and Kansas. Delegations led by Kansas City Mayor H Roe Bartle and Topeka Mayor George Schnellbacher ask Budget Bureau for rapid approval of a $20 million package to link dam and levee work with ongoing projects.
A 31 item expansion plan for Chanute is to be included in a revised Chamber of Commerce program. The noon meeting at the Tioga Hotel adopted a motion to place ideas as potential projects. Clarence Sievers led the session in Carl Pate’s absence.
The Rev Boyd Latimer of Yates Center will become rector of Grace Episcopal church with his first service on Nov 20. Latimer has pastored three mission parishes in 24 years and will move to Chanute Nov 15 to reside at the rectory. He is unmarried and succeeds Rev William E West who resigned Aug 31 to serve in Texas.
Kansas City Star photographer Roy Johnson, who joined the paper in 1937, died at age 45 from a lung condition. He contracted tuberculosis in 1951, spent 21 months in hospital, and the illness was later arrested. A lung fluid buildup led to his death at Leeds Sanatorium yesterday. Survivors include his widow, two children, a brother, a sister, and his mother.
The Neosho County Artificial Breeding Association, Erie, a non profit, received a state charter after incorporation proceedings were completed in the secretary of state's office in Topeka. John Irwin serves as resident agent.
The Rev J M Torrence of Erie was named chairman of the Neosho County UNESCO Council at its annual meeting held at the Federated church. About 200 people attended as officers were reelected or chosen and a UN Day tree planting fund was announced along with continued essay awards for high school students.
Signs of rapid recovery appeared at a Hereford sale in El Dorado. Frank R. Condell of Dellford Ranch grossed 540,060 for 61 head, average 900, compared with 525 two years ago. Forty-one bulls averaged 1,110, top bull FRC Zate Heir 7th at 5,100 to Wayne Nagle of Nampa Idaho. Heifers averaged 426.50, top at 1,000 to Byron Crocker of Brady Texas. About 600 buyers from 12 states attended.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will visit Vienna on November 5 and then travel to Brioni in Yugoslavia to meet Marshal Tito on November 6. The plans were learned while he attended a North Atlantic Treaty Organization foreign ministers conference.
Weatherman P N Bland says an Indian Summer pattern will bring clear skies and warm temperatures through Wednesday. A weak cold front will dip temperatures modestly tomorrow with lows in the 40s and highs around 70 to 80. The week should run 5 to 8 degrees above normal with no precipitation expected.
