Wives of 70 of Britain's 129000 wildcat miners have gone on strike to push husbands back to work. They refuse housework until the strikes end, now 12 days in, as cracks appear with five Yorkshire pits resuming and Derbyshire and South Wales leaders urging a return.
Two blasts struck the Union Carbide Corp plant in Texas City injuring eight people and prompting hundreds to evacuate. Fires were controlled within 30 minutes and residents returned home. The No 3 Olefins gas cracking unit caused the first explosion, a 200 foot fireball visible for miles, followed by a second blast ten minutes later.
The Agriculture Department will withdraw a regulation allowing cyclamate in bacon and ham and veto a proposal to permit it in pickled pig feet. Packers say they stopped using cyclamates after the HEW secretary’s ban. An amendment to federal meat rules to eliminate cyclamates will be issued soon.
Production fell nine percent from the same week a year ago as American Motors Corp and two General Motors plants shut due to strikes. Automakers built 184,662 cars this week versus 203,378 a year earlier. October output totals 667,826, about 112,000 below last year’s pace.
South Yemen announced the break with the United States and ordered all U S Embassy staff to leave within 24 hours after a foreign ministry summons. Morgan Guaranty Trust Co reports 13 194 000 in negotiable U S Treasury bills missing from its Wall Street headquarters since Tuesday. FBI police and banking agencies notified with serial numbers provided. Securities are short term and due next week. preliminary search completed and a further search underway. Authorities caution that serial numbers complicate resale and the bills may have circulated to mobsters and borrowers as collateral.
I Ladd Plumley of State Mutual Life warned that department stores and grocery chains will push insurance unless major underwriters attract the harried 1970s consumer. He said buyers want one stop financial service similar to supermarkets and cited the chance of a one stop insurance clinic as an alternative to traditional insurance merchandising.
Gov. Robert Docking announced the creation of a high plains regional development council to boost economic growth across 19 southwest Kansas counties and seek alliances with Oklahoma and Colorado. Harold Wills of the Dodge City Globe will chair, with aims to coordinate transportation, air service, governance, water conservation, and broader industrial development. The 19 counties include Greeley, Wichita, Scott, Lane, Ness, Hamilton, Kearny, Finney, Hodgeman, Stanton, Grant, etc.

Senator Barry Goldwater sharply criticized Senator Hugh Scott for pushing a unilateral Vietnam cease fire. Goldwater said Scott does not speak for the GOP and urged him to clarify that he does not speak for all party members. The dispute followed Scott's personal cease fire proposal and Pentagon rejection.
New York AP reports Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday with clocks set back one hour. DST, in effect since 2 a.m. last Sunday in April, ends 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in October under the Uniform Time Act of 1967, with states free to opt out by action. The Department of Transportation oversees the act.

A flock of geese prompted a non injury accident seven miles north of Parsons on a county road at 5 30 p m. Vehicles involved were a 1961 Pontiac driven by Gary Frederick 22 of 1315 N Kansas Chanute and a 1965 Dodge pickup driven by Steven Minor 16 of Parsons. Frederick said he and Minor were watching geese land in a farm field and did not see each other. Pontiac damage estimated at 175 dollars Dodge damage at 400 dollars.
Del-Rey mobile home units will base near Freonia in a 20 000 square foot plant with 10 000 additional feet planned before February production starts. Investment of 250 000 to 300 000 is anticipated. International Bazaar Inc plans a men s garment facility in Independence employing 20 at 13 000 square feet aiming for 1 500 suits monthly within two years.
