Pittsburgh AP report on steel haulers ending a violent labor dispute after 10 000 to 20 000 workers approved a settlement. Union organizers say the action boosts leverage toward 1970 talks while guarding against future strikes amid ongoing organizing efforts.
Robert Lee Morris, 21, of 1621 Malcolm, was hospitalized for observation after a 8:30 p.m. crash on 102 S. Lincoln when his 1955 Pontiac rear ended a parked 1967 Ford truck owned by Jon Rohrer Construction Co. The Ford suffered total loss and $300 damage was listed for the truck. James L. Morris, 22, of 1621 S Malcolm, was later involved in a 10 a.m. crash at Cherry and Allen driving a 1966 Chanute Lumber Co. truck. damage to the Chanute truck was about $100 and $150 to a 1965 Chevrolet pickup driven by Harold P. Linscott. Additional police reports include a two-vehicle minor collision at Main and Grant involving Bob Harmon and Roy Ray, and a Lincoln/Main/Elm backing pickup hitting a parked motorcycle with light damage. all parties were out of county.
John Hungerford a Dodge City resident aged 16 was killed in a duck hunting accident three miles north of Dodge City on Monday authorities reported the incident occurred during a local hunt and investigators were called to the scene.

The Kansas Corporation Commission received a statement on Santa Fe's plan to discontinue passenger trains Nos. 47 48 211 and 212 between Kansas City and Tulsa effective Nov. 10 1967. The ECC asked the Interstate Commerce Commission to investigate and keep service until the hearing ends. Mitchell said a Kansas hearing would be in Chanute as the central location for witnesses.

U S jets bombed Phuc Yen air base near Hanoi marking the first strike on the field this war. Air Force Marine and Navy units faced heavy anti aircraft and missiles with one MIG downed and another likely destroyed. Cratered runway and scattered destroyed aircraft visible in reconnaissance photos. Additional clashes reported south of Saigon as Viet Cong shell government positions. Maj William L Kirk credited with a MIG kill, his 90th in the war.
Area forecast calls for generally fair and colder tonight and Wednesday with northerly winds diminishing tonight. Low tonight middle 30s high Wednesday middle 50s. Topeka reports the coldest weather of the season with a cold front, strong winds and thunderstorms.
A combined dedication and open house marks development of Chanute's industrial complex off West Cherry on November 9. Ross Inc and Screw Conveyor plants join ILC and Rock plants in the observance organized by the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce industrial committee with the city commission and Mid-America Inc. Jack Lacy will speak at the dedication. Plans include luncheon or dinner, ceremony and entertainment at Highland Park softball field with plant tours to follow. Times to be announced.
Debra Dene Barnes Miss America will visit Moran for a home town welcome. A 6:30 p.m. dinner and 8:30 p.m. reception are planned with Moran officials and volunteers handling tickets and events. Mayor Fred Steffen will present the key to the city as crowds of residents attend the school auditorium event.
City bids for eight blocks of paving and two blocks of widening on East Main and surrounding streets exceeded engineer estimates. With winter near, work will be delayed until January and possibly expanded before a new contract. Streets involved include Western, Beech, Cherry, Rutter, 4th, 5th, 9th, Wilson, Allen, Tennessee, Larson, and the East Main segment between Central and Ashby.

Air Force Captain Kenneth D. Krehbiel of Topeka Kansas died in Vietnam but not as a result of hostile action. The Department of Defense announced on Monday. He is survived by his widow Norma P. Krehbiel.

TOPEKA AP Six youths, five from Denver, were in a stolen car on the Kansas Turnpike Monday when it overturned after hitting a rock embankment. Leonard Simmons 18 died in hospital about three hours after the crash. Bobbie Stobbelaar 17 suffered head injuries and lacerations. Also listed were Martha Jane Stobbelaar 15 Judith Ann Harpster 17 driver Cecelia Ann Williams 18 all of Denver and Charles Russell Douglas 18 of Kansas City.
Three polar fliers Thor Trontveit Rolf Storhav Ei ner Pedersen were rescued by a U S helicopter 90 miles southwest of Inuvik after an emergency landing during a 500 mile flight from Fairbanks to Inuvik on October 14. They endured near zero temperatures with food sleeping gear and a rifle and even shot a caribou before being found. Flight Lt John Crawford of the Royal Canadian Air Force said Trontveit sustained facial scratches while Pedersen and Storhav had an injured arm and all were walking and in good condition.
Altoona voters yesterday defeated by two votes 96 98 a bond proposal for a city sewer system. Mayor Bill Hansen said the plan will be resubmitted after consulting Farmers Home Administration representatives who would finance the project. The vote covered 140000 in revenue bonds and 70000 in general obligation bonds tied to a 18500 federal grant. FHA financing was set at four and a half percent interest.
