U S warplanes struck a naval yard near Haiphong as 4100 fresh American infantry joined 30 000 troops and 77 000 Marines in the northern battle zone. Navy jets damaged an oil depot and drydock and hit rail yards near Haiphong while a Skyhawk was downed by ground fire.
Retailers gathered at the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce to assign personal solicitation calls for the annual Christmas street decorations fund drive. Calls will occur this week with contributions turned in to the chamber office. To date $639 has been received toward a $1,500 goal, with John Congdon noting strong response to a prior letter.
Fred Brewster an auxiliary Wichita firefighter aged 28 saved his elderly neighbor Melvin Smith 65 from a burning home. He forced entry through a bolted door found Smith asleep and carried him to safety as flames damaged the residence estimated at 3500 dollars.
Americans packed the New York metropolitan area for peaceful mass demonstrations supporting U S troops in Vietnam. Newark attracted 60 000 marchers, NYC boroughs and Long Island drew about 100 000 spectators, with Waterbury and other cities adding thousands. In contrast Washington saw antiwar protests with clashes near the Pentagon and about 50 injuries as 600 people were arrested.
Dale Ellis of Gladstone aided a stranded boater on the Snake River in Washington. He heard a Mayday on citizen band radio, contacted the coast guard and Kansas Highway Patrol, and helped relay distress details until responders were engaged.
A two car collision on highway K108 at the west edge of Erie by 8 30 p m Saturday left no injuries. Ronald D Hazen 17 of rural Erie drove a 1960 Ford westbound while Bert Shackelton 74 of Erie drove a 1964 Pontiac eastbound. Shackelton left turned into a driveway causing the crash. Damages were about 250 to the Hazen car and 195 to the Shackelton vehicle.
A minor two car collision occurred at about 1 40 p m Saturday on US 169 one mile south of Chasute. Ethel D Anderson 72 of 916 S Garfield and Anita Anderson 16 of Earlton drove the southbound vehicles. Ethel attempted a left turn as Anita tried to pass causing damage to the 1950 Chevrolet and a 1959 Dodge valued at 10 and 75 dollars respectively.
A motel guest fled without paying the bill and stole a television and other items but left behind talking false teeth. A name on the plate revealed a false registration, and Sheriff M A Anderson issued a bulletin. The man was later found in New Mexico.
The area anticipates mostly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures as a storm center approaches from the northern Rockies. Tuesday should be partly cloudy with a high in the mid 60s, and there is a chance of occasional thunderstorms late tonight into Tuesday amid winds gusting 35 to 55 mph. overnight lows range 50 to 55. Rain expected Tuesday in central and eastern Kansas. Highs Sunday reached 78 to 81 across cities. overnight lows fell to 37 to 62 depending on location. Highs near 80 today with windy, clear to partly cloudy conditions. Winds up to 45 mph were reported in central Kansas yesterday.
Leo Held, 39, a Hammermill lab technician, opened fire in the Lock Haven area across multiple locations. He killed six, including a neighbor, and wounded seven before being wounded and captured about 95 minutes after the first shots.
Detroit sources report UAW officials move toward ratification of a Ford agreement potentially costing Ford close to a billion dollars over three years. Ford executives plan to restart lines soon if the strike ends this week. The Ford Council meets tonight with votes planned for Tuesday and Wednesday at 25 plants across 25 states. Walter Reuther says workers will return by Thursday, with production resuming weeks later. Ford cites early Wednesday as earliest return.

Fire at Farlow Implement Co in Kinsley Kansas caused more than 100000 in damage. A small explosion preceded the blaze, which volunteers battled for two hours. Only the front wall remained. nearby buildings were damaged and eight vehicles were affected.
Hundreds of Buffalo residents gathered for the annual Homecoming Parade and Picnic on a sunny fall day. The event featured bands from Altoona Fredonia Midway and Chanute nine parade floats pulling teams and prizes for top floats and oldest and youngest attendees.

Mrs. M. H. Carpenter two miles east of Chanute said her farm home was entered over the weekend. A large piggy bank containing 50 to 75 dollars was stolen through a bedroom window. Police forwarded the report to the Neosho County sheriff for investigation.
In Pittsburgh the summer home of mediator William J. Hart, a figure in steel hauler negotiations, was rocked by a dynamite blast as strike leaders vote on a new settlement. Hart warned truckers could stay out until hell freezes over if a better offer fails.
Kansas traffic death log shows 36 fatalities for October 1967, 519 for the 1967 period through 9 a.m. Monday, compared with 601 in the comparable 1966 period. Data notes include Topeka figures and AP coding.
The Supreme Court denied LeRoy Garber and the ACLU a hearing over Kansas compulsory attendance law for Amish families. By one vote, the court dismissed the appeal for want of jurisdiction after Garber, fined $5 for pulling his daughter from public school at age 14, challenged the ruling of the Kansas Supreme Court. Chief Justice Warren and Justices Douglas and Fortas dissented.
