Oren Barker of 509 N Central asks if his five pound three ounce sweet potato from his garden sets a Chanute local record. He dug the tuber yesterday and seeks confirmation from local authorities.
The first Chanute United Fund campaign launches a two week drive with a goal of 19876.92 dollars. Advanced gifts focus on business districts as volunteers contact 30 workers and employers. Participating groups include Red Cross Boy Scouts Girl Scouts and Salvation Army.
Harry A. Carey 75 longtime Wichita independent oil operator died Sunday. Carey led the Kansas Skeet Shooting Association as president and served as a director of the Kansas Association for Wildlife, with active involvement in the Arkansas Valley Gun Club.
Robert L. Pratt of Coffeyville, director of the Kansas Chamber, will outline the conference aims at tomorrow night's event. Pratt serves as immediate past president and current executive vice president of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce and manages the Coffeyville Daily Journal and local radio station. The 6:30 dinner program at Tioga Hotel includes Don Wiggins and L M Weltmer as additional speakers. public attendance with advance meal reservations is urged.
The Weather Bureau reported a front interrupted a mild pattern with clearer skies in most of Kansas. Readings should drop to freezing tonight with a warming trend starting in the west Tuesday and several days of mild, clear weather to follow.

Martin J. Zaworski Jr. 41 formerly a Hutchinson reformatory guard killed in a curve crash near Manitou Springs Colorado. His wife Georgia Mae 41 injured and taken to a Colorado Springs hospital with non serious injuries. They moved to Colorado Springs on August 31.
The 1961 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded posthumously to Dag Hammarskjold, late UN secretary-general, who perished in a Congo air crash while negotiating to end fighting. The 1960 prize went to Albert Luthuli for leadership in South Africa’s anti apartheid movement.
In Detroit, James R Hoffa and the Teamsters accuse AFL-CIO President George Meany and 24 officials of libel and slander in a million-dollar suit filed in U S District Court. In Kansas Claudette Kroft of Holyrood won the state twirling contest to become Miss Majorette of Kansas with Judy Anderson of Hays as runner up.
The Soviet news agency Tass reported a giant nuclear explosion described as possibly near 50 megatons. Observers in Sweden and France noted record yields, with Uppsala's seismology center contrasting cautious U.S. AEC commentary. The blast, centered near Novaya Zemlya, occurred around 3:34 a.m. EST and sparked global protest and debate over timing and safety.
In Berlin the United States protested to the Soviet commandant after East German police halted E Allan Lightner Jr top U S official at the Friedrickstrasse checkpoint. U S troops with fixed bayonets escorted Lightner into the Soviet sector as tanks stood nearby.

Rudolph Hopkins, 33, was arraigned in Salina on a second degree murder charge for stabbing Walter Lee Thomas, 23, Saturday. Magistrate Lou Tickel set a $25,000 bond and scheduled the preliminary hearing for November 9.
In Collinsville Illinois Rich Lauchli 35 a former paratroop sergeant was arrested after a Shiloh town weapons display. Two Browning rifles a machinegun an M4 rifle a 60 mm mortar and a 57 mm anti tank rifle were seized. National leader Robert DePugh 37 of Norborne Missouri said drills continued nationwide and weapons are for instruction only. Lauchli free on 1000 bond will appear in magistrate court November 3.
Marguerite Barrett of 2152 S Highland won The Tribune weekly $3 tip prize for a World War II veteran who witnessed the Iwo Jima flag raising visiting Chanute. The tip led to a story on John Shepherd of Denver, an officer in the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and participant in the mountain ascent mission. The Tribune invites local tips and announces next week's winner.
Five people died in Kansas traffic accidents over the weekend. Near Emporia two college students, John H. Hoskins and Howard M. Wechsler, were killed when their car struck a bridge on K99. two other students were injured. Donald R. Caplinger, 40, died when his car overturned on K19 south of Larned after a dance gig. A bicycle collision near Olathe fatally injured Bushrod Jackson Marion Jr., 2. Clarence D. Klassen, 48, died from injuries in a two car crash south of Abilene. his wife Margaret and Donald R. LeBlanc were injured.

Thieves ransacked Erie High School and Erie Grade School offices, smashed a safe, and stole about 50 dollars. Entry came through a broken side window at the high school and a spryed open window at the grade school. Damages to the vault ceiling and lock were extensive. sheriff Sloan and KBI agent Emmons investigated.
Atchison Kansas AP Pickets pulled back at the LFM plant ending a two week strike. Local 4036 United Steel Workers and the company plan to resume wage contract talks as workers return. About 200 stayed on the job during the walkout. The plant, Atchison's largest industry, manufactures railroad equipment.
