London AP reports Paul McCartney disputed death rumors claiming he is alive and well. Apple notes U S calls and letters flood in while friends confirm he was in England with wife Linda, two children and a dog.
Highway patrol officers who assisted in guarding towers at the Kansas Penitentiary in Lansing will resume normal duties after Friday. Col. William Albott, patrol superintendent, said the relief is possible as state penal officials have hired additional guards.
In Milan protests by Montedison workers and Farmitalia strikers escalated as police fought stone throwers with clubs and tear gas. One officer was hospitalized and several demonstrators were bruised before police dispersed the crowd.
Washington reports a five tenth percent rise in living costs for September. Clothing prices jumped, food failed to decline, housing and services costs increased. The Consumer Price Index rose to 129.3, meaning $12.93 for every $10 of 1957-59 based goods.
President Nixon capped a state visit with champagne toasts at a state dinner and extended an invitation for another trip to the Shah of Iran. The Shah asked for increased military aid, seeking Iran as a major peacekeeping force in the Persian Gulf after private talks earlier in the day.
President Nixon urged Americans to seek a spiritual quality to guide them through stress, noting such guidance has aided presidents before. The White House event drew over 80 members of House and Senate prayer groups as Rep Del Clausen gave the invocation and Sen Wallace Bennett read the scriptures.
The AP reports the U S government asked for a preliminary injunction to force Georgia to desegregate its 192 public school systems by the 1970-71 year. It cites nine steps and a timetable. Of the systems 109 have no Black pupils or are desegregating voluntarily. 83 are under court orders or have federal funds cut for noncompliance.
District Attorney Edmund Dinis says he will pursue an inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne's death despite doubts over exhumation for an autopsy. Judge Brominski has not yet ruled on the request and may wait until after the November election.
The third district fall convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and auxiliary meets here Saturday and Sunday with headquarters at Cecil J. Meeker Post 1654. Registration starts 4:30 p.m. Saturday. a Dutch lunch and dance follow. Sunday opens with a 10 a.m. post meeting and includes speaker Capt. Edward Nagy and sessions on commands, canteen, and youth programs.
Shawnee County Judge William R. Carpenter heard oral arguments on whether the Kansas Highway Commission can challenge a 1969 gasoline tax law. He will decide if Wichita and Sedgwick County may join as parties and set a Nov. 14 pre-trial conference date. The case centers on a tax earmarked for freeway construction.
Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott proposed that the United States declare a cease fire in Vietnam. He stressed it would be a personal hope not a presidential trial balloon and suggested moving from protective reaction to an announced date without firing if not attacked. The Neosho County sheriff reports a 1966 Ford pickup, a shotgun, shells and clothing were stolen from W. E. Mc Coy’s residence in A.2. The theft occurred Tuesday night after the front screen door was broken. Mc Coy reported the loss at 10:40 p.m.
