New Proposal Placed Before Truck Strike Negotiators

A seven state mediation panel has devised a plan paying truckers 13.70 an hour after a four hour wait for loading and unloading at steel mills. The proposal goes to the National Steel Carriers Association and unions for vote this week as the strike harms steelmakers with 15,000 to 20,000 jobs affected and deliveries down 16 percent in September. Violence and rock throwing also occur near Maryland and Pennsylvania turnpikes amid mounting tensions.

Area C of C Meeting Tonight and Week Busy

The Cha nute Area Chamber of Commerce directors meet tonight at 8 in the chamber offices to discuss two policy matters. The public relations committee resumes goodwill breakfast visits to nearby communities tomorrow, with Chanute 30 attendees and Parson 15 from Erie area at Country Kitchen. Wednesday features a teachers tea from 3 15 to 5 15 p.m. for Unified 413 and St. Patrick's schools. Thursday noon aviation committee meets at the Tioga Hotel.

Minor Accidents Investigated in Erie and North of Parsons

The sheriff's office investigated two minor traffic incidents Saturday. At about 8 a.m. in Erie a backing car owned by Virgil Hines and driven by George Ellis damaged a parked truck in the Hines elevator lot, with the 1964 IHC truck owned by James John of Thayer sustaining front side damage and the 1948 Chevrolet incurring left side damage. At about 2 p.m. near Parsons a 1959 Pontiac driven by Parthcia Clasen damaged its left rear fender after hitting a five axle truck tractor driven by Eugene Lubbers of Parsons. No tractor damage was listed.

Shooting of Firearms Unlawful in Town

Police reminded residents it is unlawful to shoot any firearm inside city limits including pellet and BB guns. Violators face arrest and prosecution under city ordinance after several complaints about people shooting at squirrels in town.

Seven Die In Kansas Weekend Traffic Crashes

The Associated Press reports seven deaths on Kansas highways over the weekend. Falls include Norma Jean Parks 26 and Linda Sturgeon 21 killed on Kansas 10 near Eudora. Richard Boswurm Jr. 19 injured fatally on U.S. 77 near Florence. Leroy Taylor 51 killed near Upland. Donald L. Yeager 20 killed near La Cygne. Lawrence E. Covert 20 killed near Wichita. and Richard Paul Owns 23 killed on U.S. 169 near Olathe.

Two Found Shot to Death in Wichita Evangelist Home

In Wichita, evangelist Rev. James Henderson, 26, and his wife Louise, 23, were found shot to death in their home early Sunday as their four children aged 1 month to 5 years slept. Police said both were killed likely at close range by an automatic pistol. no weapon was recovered. The eldest child Janice found the bodies.

Five Firemen Die in Blaze in New Jersey

Five Ridgefield Park firefighters died while battling a blaze when a wall collapsed. Fourteen children under twenty one lost fathers, and five wives became widows. The Hudson Dispatch fund in Union City raised eight thousand dollars for survivors.

Forecast calls for fair conditions with diminishing winds, cooler tonight with frost. Tuesday partly cloudy and warmer with lows 32 to 40 and highs in the 50s to 60s. Western Kansas had a light freeze with readings around 30 at Garden City and Goodland and 31 at Hill City. Rain fell over the weekend in eastern Kansas with up to 1.5 inches around Kanopolis Lake.

Two Disappear in Boat Sinking Off Biscayne Bay

Wainwright Vickers and his wife Bambara survived after a 14 hour ordeal when a borrowed boat with Tom Carter and his wifeDolores tangled in a squall sank in Biscayne Bay. Carter is presumed dead and two others drowned as the remaining pair floated through the night. Vickers and his wife were hospitalized for exposure and skin irritation from gasoline.
