Veteran recalls Iwo Jima flag rise at Brotherhood meeting

Left Hand pitch veteran and Brother hood of Railroad Trainmen member John Shepherd, now in Denver, attended the state meeting with 500 others. He served in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 78th Marines, part of the force that planted the flag atop Mt Suribachi during the 32 day battle. Shepherd knew the six flag raisers and helped cover their advance with a heavy machine gun as prints of the image circulated. Only two of the six remain, Rene Gagnon and John Bradley. Bradley was wounded and tended by Shepherd.

Tulsa based Ross Aviation Inc asks the Civil Aeronautics Board for authority to run scheduled service with twin engine aircraft to Kansas Oklahoma Arkansas Texas and Missouri. Proposed Tulsa to Kansas City Missouri via Bartlesville Coffeyville Independence Chanute Topeka and more. Ford Restarts Half Its Plants After UAW Strike

Ford Motor Co resumes production at about half of its 16 assembly plants after a 13 day UAW strike. The company aims to reach full output by midweek as the Rouge complex deal prompts key back to work. Three core plants, including Walton Hills, loom as potential bottlenecks.

Kennedy calls for united labor front on jobless crisis

W P Kennedy grand president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen urged a common labor front to fight unemployment at a two day state convention in Chanute. He cited six to seven million jobless in the nation and railroads shedding workers amid diesel power automation and consolidation. He urged Congress to ease railroad regulation and consider reviving railroad business as the convention paid tribute to long serving auxiliary members and marked by a Chanute dedication plaque.

Triplets Born in Jersey Cow Win Tribune Tip Award

Mrs. Raymond Hutchins of Thayer wins the Tribune weekly tip contest with a report of triplet calves born to a Jersey cow owned by Lloyd Dulavey. All three calves survived and thrived. The story appeared in Saturdays Tribune.

Oil Truck Explodes Killing Driver in Elmo Kansas

An oil truck unloading at a state highway storage tank in Elmo Kansas exploded, killing driver Leslie J. Kiser, 32, of Wichita. Waldo Wollam, district highway engineer, called the accident unusual and announced an investigation. He explained road oil is heated and hauled in insulated tankers, with a spark possibly triggering an explosion if heated beyond a critical temperature.

State Traffic Fatal to Five

Five persons died over the weekend from Kansas traffic accidents. In Johnson County a sport car overturned killing a man and a woman. Patricia Y. Ross was identified as a victim. A second fatality occurred in a head on crash near Olathe injuring Patrolman George Burger. Additional deaths occurred in Scott and McPherson counties from two-truck and two-car crashes on U S 83 and U S 56 involving Emory S. Grippin Mrs. Evert Sutphin and Esther Wayman.

Struck With Bat Kansas Cition Dies

Jesse F. Herd aged 58 died after a baseball bat strike by his 19 year old son Erwin Lee Herd at their Kansas City Kansas home. Detectives say the assault occurred September 15 when Herd became drunk and menaced Mrs Herd. The son was held on a charge of assault with intent to kill but released after family declined prosecution.

Family man wounded in Kansas target shooting incident

Donald L. Reed, 32, of Lola Kansas was critically wounded Sunday when a .22 pistol fired a shot behind his ear at a pond near Colony. Reed was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Mrs Seth Winter and her two sons were present. Winter quoted one boy as saying the gun failed to fire before it discharged toward Reed.

Three Die In Carthage Two-Car Crash

A two car collision eight miles west of Carthage Missouri on Saturday killed Gordon Potts 51 and his wife Ruth Elizabeth Potts 45 of Oronogo and Virginia Wallace Nesch 58 of Pittsburg Kansas. Roland John Nesch 59 was injured. Mrs Nesch was Crawford County Red Cross secretary.

Mild March Weather Persists Across Kansas

Topeka reports clear dry conditions with no moisture expected for several days. Sunday highs ranged from 71 in Olathe to 79 in Goodland and Hill City, with overnight lows from 40 to 50. Weather Bureau notes a slight warmup today, especially in eastern Kansas, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 40s, aiding eastern harvest and wheat planting.
