At a Chanute city meeting last night the request by the Santa Fe Railroad to close Ash street from Highland to Santa Fe was denied. Officials said the section is needed to handle east west traffic in the northern part of town. The session also noted a near completion study of electric rates and discussed opening new streets in the southwest Chanute area where building is rising. Minutes and the appropriation ordinance were approved. The meeting was led by Commissioner J. D. Lightfoot in Mayor Rice's absence. The opening prayer was given by Rev. J. Rolland Christenson.
Leroy Jennings, 20, on a solo flight, landed safely after a hawk collided with his plane near the landing area. The hawk died in the crash with a four foot four inch wingspan, while the aircraft sustained minor wing-tip damage. Jennings was completing flight requirements for a pilot license at Pioneer Appuanes Co.

Ten school districts in northeastern Wilson County rejected the Benedict Buffalo consolidation proposal 195 to 41. Buffalo vote was 114 to 51 in favor while Blue and 99 approved 15 to 1 and 27 to 4 respectively. Results from other districts not yet available. steering committee members could not be reached.
The Lions Club hosts its ninth annual pet and bike parade tomorrow afternoon. Entrants meet at Royster Junior High at 1 00 pm with the parade starting at 1 30 pm heading from Royster east to City Park. Free drinks and a movie ticket prize are offered, with three age groups judging pets and vehicles and prizes of 3 2 1 dollars plus a special 2 dollar prize for most unusual pet.
Salina Kansas Don Crawford of Hutchinson was elected president of the Kansas Association of Real Estate Boards at their annual convention. He succeeds Alva J Powell of Coffeyville. R Virg Ellis of Topeka was elected vice president and Marvin Smith of Wichita secretary.
Chanute Future Farmers of America team earned gold emblem honors in the national poultry judging contest in Kansas City. Active participants Lou Reinhardt Bill Bareis Clinton Swiler and Dean Daniels all received gold emblem ratings with rankings to be announced. Instructor Charles O. Carter Jr. learned of the win via a morning call from a state FFA official.

Sunny skies prevail through tomorrow with warming in the northwest tonight and statewide tomorrow. five day outlook shows temperatures near normal to four degrees below normal and little or no precipitation through next Wednesday. Low readings tonight 35 to 42 with highs tomorrow in the lower 70s.
