LeRoy Sherman Smith, 41, of Salina, died early today in a single vehicle collision on U.S. 40 west of Salina. The crash occurred in the early hours, authorities said.

Parade planned here to welcome new firm

The Chamber of Commerce calls for parade entries on Nov 3 to welcome Virginia Carolina Chemical Co as a Chanute industry. Floats will precede an open house at the V C plant on West 21st with a farmers luncheon. Prizes total 50 for top floats and 25 15 10 for the first three, while commercial floats have no guarantee or prize.

Presbyterians Urge Study of Presidential Candidates

Scooter Car Crash Claims Railroader Near Downs

Charles H. Johnson 53 of Arkansas City, a Santa Fe Railway employee, was killed when his rail scooter collided with a car at a grade crossing on Kansas 18 about eight miles south of Downs. Eugene Junk of Downs drove the car. Johnson was hurled 70 feet.

The Kansas City Election Board reports about 210000 names on the voter rolls with strikeoffs likely dropping eligible voters to around 203000 for the November 8 election. In 1952 the eligible count was 231000 and in 1956 it was 207000.

Thoman Sentenced in Humboldt Strangulation Case

Ivan Thoman of Humboldt pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter in his wife’s strangulation death. Judge Spencer Gard sentenced him to 3 to 5 years in state prison. Mrs. Thoman, 35, was found dead in the Humboldt apartment July 30.

Rain generous in Kansas with heavy Wichita totals

Beneficial rains moved across central and eastern Kansas Wednesday night reaching over three inches in spots. Wichita reported 2.25 to 3.10 inches, with other measured rainfall across the region ranging from about half an inch to just over an inch. Forecaster Garrett noted possible additional storms this afternoon and tonight in central and eastern Kansas.

Two Chanute youths admit theft from a car in North Lee lot

Police say two young men admitted stealing a carburetor from a 1955 Pontiac owned by Ewing C. Wolfe at 601 W. 14th. The car was moved to the North Lee street lot after a recent wreck. The carburetor with four barrel equipment valued at $87. Charges pending.

Glen Halbe, chairman of Chanute tour ist and conventions committee, announced at a Chamber luncheon that two brochure layouts are prepared for Chanute tourism.
